around here, its not legal, so when a cyclist splits the lane is met with disdain since they are breaking the law. and since its not a law the drivers aren't expecting a the lane split so when they change lanes, they aren't looking for it.
so it easier for a cyclist to just not do it. you really are putting yoru existence into the hands of the drivers when you split lanes.
This post is about motorcyclists, not bicyclists. No one refers to motorcyclists as 'cyclists'.
It's legal for bicyclists in DC as long as it's "safe". For me that means slow/stopped traffic, enough space, no one merging, and i'm going slow (maybe 5 mph).
