I’m fine with motorcycles lane splitting.
I am not fine with those jack ass atv riders and dirt bike gangs terrorizing the streets.

around here, its not legal, so when a cyclist splits the lane is met with disdain since they are breaking the law. and since its not a law the drivers aren't expecting a the lane split so when they change lanes, they aren't looking for it.

so it easier for a cyclist to just not do it. you really are putting yoru existence into the hands of the drivers when you split lanes.

This post is about motorcyclists, not bicyclists. No one refers to motorcyclists as 'cyclists'.

It's legal for bicyclists in DC as long as it's "safe". For me that means slow/stopped traffic, enough space, no one merging, and i'm going slow (maybe 5 mph).

Lane splitting isn't illegal in DC, falling back to the reckless driving standard. I lane split when traffic is dead stopped at a light, and I go *slow*. Other than getting a car door opened into me, which was NBD given the low speed, it's pretty hard to get hit. I do not lane split under any other circumstance. I think it's illegal in VA.

Unbelievably dangerous, low class, third world practice that just encourages even more reckless stupidity than there already is.

Speaking as a rider of over 20 years, I think lane splitting is insane. There is absolutely no way I’d do it except in situations where traffic is actually stopped and not moving *at all*.

On an air-cooled engine bike, some amount of airflow is needed to keep the engine from overheating while running, otherwise you’ll overheat and break down, further contributing to traffic jams. But on liquid cooled bikes, it’s not really necessary at slow speeds or sitting in traffic.

But lane splitting is crazy dangerous. All it takes is one butter blond soccermommy sending a text who lets her pearl white Range Rover drift out of her lane for a second to kill you.

No thanks.

Lane splitting is when motorcycles use the paint lines to pass slow (<30 mph) traffic at not more than 10 mph over traffic speed. Very useful in stop & go traffic.

Filtering is similar, but occurs at stop lights, with stopped traffic. Bikes move to the front, again, using the paint lines.

I'd like to see it legalized.

Lane splitting is fine, so long as Motorcyclists accept the liability and fault for accidents.

I think it is time dmv area gets real about allowing it. There are not that many motorcycles here anyway.
its not legal, but the cops can't ever catch them doing it. not do i think that cops care.

the biggest issue with lane splitting, isnt the fact that they do it. its the fact that its not being done safely. the speed differential between a the lane splitter and regular traffic should only be 10mph. and no lane splitting above 35. are the CA recommendation. but around here. it really is the wild west since no one is enforcing...

Dangerous. A motorcycle did it to me and I am almost tapped that ass, in a bad way. He was right in my blind spot when I was trying to move over and I’m an overly cautious driver that checks multiple times when switching
