Students with IEPs are entitled to special education services through the semester in which they turn 21. So you could certainly discuss in an IEP meeting taking a reduced course load and spending more than 4 years in high school.

My child is a college-bound senior at Wilson. None of his friends have a full 8-period schedule. Some do dual enrollment, some have jobs, and some just have really short school days. Wilson is so crowded that this is encouraged, assuming that your child has taken care of the basics for graduation.

It might also be possible to have home instruction as part of the IEP. DCPS has a home/hospital program or it might be possible to do some classes and get credit through self-study of an online course.

A reduced schedule for a documented disability could be an IEP team decision. But the student would still need to complete all DCPS graduation requirements to graduate.

I know of several DCPS kids who have taken a reduced course load in later HS years and had jobs for the rest of the day. Might be only kids who are showing they have enough credits to graduate.

Does the IEP recommend a reduced daily schedule or is it your feeling as the parent that a partial day is best?

Does anyone know if DCPS is ever open to a student who takes a reduced schedule? This would be for mental health reasons and the child has an IEP. Just wondering if anyone has some anecdotal info.
