I haven’t ever seen most of the following schools but am hoping they’re good, serious schools for the kinds of bright, serious kids who might have gone to
Tufts in the 1980s but might be shut out of those now:

University of Rochester.

Syracuse University.

The New England state public flagships.

College of the Holy Cross.

The College of New Jersey

Hobart and William Smith

Norwich University (I think this is like a Citadel of the North)

Tufts is not a target. W&M either, unless VA resident.

This poster is wildly optimistic. This was good advice several years back.

It depends on the high school! A 3.8 GPA is high GPA unweighted.

Example of recent matriculations for a top private that doesnt rank: https://www.holton-arms.edu/scholar/college-counseling/matriculation
Of those who went to national universities, fewer kids attend ones ranked below 50 than 30 or higher (and same for SLACs).

DD did not attend this school but one of similar rigor/reputation. She had good ECs, a 3.8 GPA and took honors all 4 years in all classes. We are professional but not anywhere near Z list type family; she attends Penn.

The poster said medium size or SLAC.
Why don't you go be stupid on another forum.

It really depends on what high school your kid attends and what level classes he's taken. A 3.8 at a top 5 private carries more weight. And how many APs, honors, intensified classes did he take?

Provided the 3.8 UW comes from a good private:

Vassar
Colby
W&L or Richmond if ok with not the Northeast specifically
Denison could be a decent safety

Colleges know that most private HS’s don’t weight GPA’s and consider these applicants accordingly.

None of those are medium-sized or smaller. They are huge and are reaches due to low acceptance rates (rates have really dropped the last couple of years at these schools).

I have a similar kid. We are also needing help choosing safeties, so if anyone has insights for those, please mention safeties as well.
