I don't live next door to anyone with kids but I have a dog who tends to bark outside at night and we feel really bad about it. We try not to let her out too late but sometimes she scratches at the door around 10 or so and it doesn't seem humane to make her wait until morning. She barks whether we're outside with her or not. Our guess is she hears other dogs in the distance or animals rustling or who knows what in the dark. If my dog were disturbing someone on a regular basis I'd definitely be receptive to hearing about it from them.
I thought all bark collars involved administering shock and have thus been hesitant to use one. But it looks like some spray a scent or emit an ultrasonic noise to distract the dog. I'm going to look into this.

Small yappy dogs tend to live a long time! Guess you better get used to him.
I have a baby and a loud dog, the baby is used to him barking and he barks loud, loud, loud. I second the white noise machine.

What can they do about it? Plenty. They can get a bark collar, train their dog, or if all else fails then get rid of it.
It's not okay that it wakes up your kids every night, OP.
Even 10 mins every night at 10pm is unreasonable. Having a dog is NOT a right. Not when it disturbs reasonable people who live in the neighborhood.
Ha good luck with that. My neighbors have two loud dogs that they walk late at night. Get a white noise machine.

Use a fan or other white noise in your children's rooms to try to mask the dog barking while you try to talk to the neighbors.

I didn’t know there were things like bark collars. Ok, then I guess they can do something about it. I just assumed it was their dog’s personality - what do I know?
They also have a toddler and I assume this dog is white noise to that baby. I doubt the barking wakes up their own kid, otherwise they would have done something about it.

+1 to the white noise machines. We have 3 different neighbors with yippy dogs. But if it's going on past 10 p.m., you may want to check your local noise ordinances. You may be able to call it in as a public nuisance.

If the dog is waking your kids up, then you have the right to go and ask them not to get it out late. I don't get people sometimes, if my kid was screaming outside at 10 pm, I'm sure I would have been in trouble with the whole neighborhood!

Ugh, frustrating. I have a dog but we never let him out in the backyard, we walk him instead, so no barking--not sure if owners would take this suggestion, though, if they don't walk theirs at night.
I'd get white noise machines for your kids to see if that helps, but not sure what else to recommend.

I am just venting, as there is no solution. The dog barks non-stop when my next door neighbors put it in outside their fenced in backyard. I have no idea who or what it is barking at. When they let the dog out at 10 pm every night, it barks so much that it sometimes wakes my kids up. Then they can’t fall back to sleep bc they have already been asleep. It has been months and that dog is still not white noise. I want to sit outside in my back yard, but don’t want this dog barking at me non stop. Neighbors don’t seem to care that their dog continues to bark, but they seem friendly enough. I wish we could move!
