When it becomes clear which twin is Evil and which one is Good.

I have a friend with identical twins. She's has dressed them the same their whole lives. And then of course now it's A Thing. They insist on being dressed alike. I'm talking even hair accessories, shoes, coats, everything. But it's also because the girls don't know any different, this is how they've always dressed, so they insist on it.

It breaks my heart in a number of weird ways. Like to STOP this habit at this point will feel monumental. When we spend time with them, no one can tell them apart, so you don't use their names. It inhibits people from forming personal relationships to the girls.

Honestly I really like this woman in so many ways. But this thing, the dressing her kids the EXACT SAME WAY EVERY DAY has really thrown me for a loop.

My DS went to preschool with identical twins who always dressed identically. Oddly they had an older brother who was also dressed identically to his younger twin brothers whenever I saw him at pick up. Anyway, none of us, including DS, could tell them apart, which made it difficult to treat them as individuals. Don't do that.

I have identical twins and I specifically dressed them differently (assigned colors) from birth so other people could tell them apart.

Then they went through a stage around 3-4 when they insisted on dressing alike all the time, so of course I let them, but made sure they had sliiiiighly different shoes.

From the age of 5 to now (7), they have been increasingly dressing differently, though occasionally they will specifically choose to wear the same thing.

I’ve worked with lots of twins as a nanny and they’ve never been dressed alike. That’s kind of weird. One family with identical girls puts pinks and reds and purples on one and blues and greens on the other. They’re in Kindergarten now and choose their own clothes so sometimes it’s harder to tell since they don’t always wear “their colors” but if you look closely they always have something like a barrette or socks or something that tells you who is who.

Birth. Not twins, but I have 2 sons. I buy them 1 set of coordinated shirts each season - so summer / winter. That’s it.

I teach preschool and I love when parents dress their twins not alike when they are both in my class. Up close I can usually tell, but from far away it’s hard. I would love to be able to tell them apart quickly from across the playground. At home do what you want, but at school give us teachers and fellow students a hand by dressing them differently.

Parents should choose for themselves when the children are young enough to not be involved in the decision. when the child start to have opinions about their clothing, then they should choose. Could be 3 years old, could be 14. Unless you have twins, or are a twin child, it doesn't affect you.

No experience with twins but I think by 3/4 they would have desires of their own for what to wear. My 3 year old certainly know what she wants to wear in the morning and she gets some choice.
