You can get an extra deep tub for a shower-tub combo. We did one in a previous house, I think the manufacturer was MTI and it was 18" deep or so.

Depending on your space you could also consider a Japanese style soaking tub - they are smaller but deeper than American tubs.

As long as there's a tub somewhere in the house, I would personally prefer a big shower. Most adults take shower 95% of the time...

Hi Op - I’m in the exact same situation. We do have a hall bathroom with tub for kids, but I’d love to be able to take a hot bath during the week. With dinner, then kids’ bath before bedtime, there’s no time! And I can’t do it after bedtime because the tub is right by the nursery and the water would wake everyone up.

I’ve gone back and forth on this for almost 2 years and I’m leaning toward a really nice enclosed shower/tub combo with sleek glass doors. You can do full glass doors or just a glass “flap” like hotels often have. I recently visited The Tile Shop and they had a couple of bathroom designs laid out that I thought looked nice. I plan to go back and think through the design, then either buy tile there or copy the look by sourcing my own tile.

Two other options which I nixed but might interest you:

-small ofuro soaking tub and separate small standing glass shower

-tiled off bathroom area with tub inside and shower fixture on the wall... so basically a giant shower room with a tub inside. Houzz and google with show you some ideas.

I have seen a large soaker tub that is also a shower. It looks fine. I think if you love to take baths you should not give up the bathtub.

The only other bath is in the kids bathroom and while I guess that's ok now, it won't be when I have two teenagers in a few years. I want them to have their own space - and it's the same lame, shallow tub in there.

Can you find space to "borrow" from an adjacent room to get the soaker tub and separate shower you really want? If you can, I would do that. If you can't, do the tub/shower combo since you enjoy taking baths. Don't do a glass door with a tub, just get a nice hotel-like white waffle curtain.

Get the tricked out shower and be done with it. Take your bath in another bathroom.

We are thinking about redoing our master bathroom and I really wanted a nice walk in shower and a separate soaker tub, but upon taking measurements, we just can't fit it plus adding the plumbing would just be too much for our budget. So we can either do a nice walk in shower or a traditional tub/shower combo. We have the tub/shower combo now and I really love to take a bath a few times a month in the evening for stress relief so I'm hesitant to give up the tub, though I like the look of a shower only better. Are there nice looking tub/shower combos that still look high end? Do I do a glass door with it - I hate having a shower curtain (that's what we have now)? And can you get a decent sized "soaker" tub with a shower as well? Our current tub is really shallow and not very comfortable.
