The invitation was part of Principal Sah Brown’s plan to introduce residents to Eastern.

Clapp, who is white, came away impressed. After the visit, it was decided.

Her children would attend Eastern.

“I want my kids to know they are no better than any other kids from any other background and to pull them out of their feeder school because it’s predominantly black school, that sends the wrong message,” Clapp said.”

One Tok class is not enough to make me choose Eastern. ToK is taught at every IB school, like for instance, DCI.

I wonder what this parent would think of my kids, who aren’t white and choose charter. I’m not sending my kids to E-H or Eastern.

I think the point is that the Eastern class showed her that it's good enough for her kids, not that it's uniquely good.

I think her statements are specifically about her and her family's values. I admire her efforts - not sure I will make the same decisions, but very glad to have parents like her around.

Hmm I do not care for people who send the message that those of us with high academic standards are racists.

Me too. My child is only 6 but I have an eye on Eastern as an up and coming school with a nice facility. No reason it could not work out.

Every time I am in there (which is most Saturdays) I am struck by how clean it is. How do they do it?

You guys are cute. There are a number of DC schools with beautiful facilities, but failing student bodies and largely unstable of often poor groups of teachers. That's why these schools are under capacity, despite having nice physical facilities.

It is easy to marvel at the building itself when you come for something on a weekend. Marveling at the high school and education your kid would get there is a different beast altogether.

Let's see if you even keep your 6 year old at your IB elementary before you wax poetic about Eastern.

That’s because it’s 1/3 vacant.

Unfortunately, the article came across to me as the ES was saved once it was mostly white.

Any school can be approved if enough resources and attention are invested. The attendees’ race is irrelevant, unless that is what is determining what resources and attention are available for improving that school.

Let's see what Clapp really does when the rubber hits the road years from now. Very easy to declare you will attend IB high school when your kids have plenty of elementary school to finish.

Also, I really dislike the idea that sending a kid to a charter sends the message that they are better than others and that is because they are white.

I would be more forgiving if Weedon didn’t judge parents who picked other schools for their kid because that’s what was best for their kid. For years anyone choosing charter was racist. I have personally gotten pushback from some of my neighbors (like Weedon) for going with a popular charter. I have no problem pointing out their hypocrisy now.

She wants to go to Eastern: Let her go there.

I appreciate the family being so transparent. It’s a hard thing to struggle with.

I actually think this is representative of the pain that many parents felt as they choose schools: what is best for their kid
Vs what it means for our community. I find it refreshing that it’s being talked about and paired with data

Will she go to the selective public high school she was accepted to along with hundreds of other high-achieving children? Or will she attend Eastern Senior High, the traditional public high school blocks from her home, a school with an International Baccalaureate (IB) program and robust extracurricular activities — but low scores on standardized tests?

I don’t understand the problem- send your child to Walls and enjoy being a hypocrite. Problem solved!
