OP - He needes a full physical and a sleep study. They also can start with a simple oxygen level test you wear over night on your finger to see how the levels go at night. I have sleep apnea, and I can tell you that I know when I do not use the mask, the quality of sleep is much less. Poor sleep patterns or a change of sleep patterns can also be related to depression. SOmehow you have to convince your husband to want to find out what might be up.

Agree he needs to see a doctor. His hours of sleep are not unusual (my DH is 9:30 to 6), but the inability to wake him is not normal.

But I didnt realize) and like you are describing- hard to wake. I didnt realize he was not getting enough oxygen and his body was exhausted. We learned he had lung cancer. Take him to the doctor for blood work. By the time we learned my husband was sick, we could do very little.

If he has a drug problem, the thought of a random drug test won’t keep him away from his drug of choice.

He will just say “I’m sorry I need more sleep than you. It’s really frustrating because he can be quite mean(he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body typically) and says/does things he doesn’t mean if he were to get woken up before morning.

Even if he’s exhausted he shouldn’t seem delirious or drunk — that’s extreme. Might he be taking a sleep aid that he’s not telling you about, or a medication? What you describe is a bit concerning and worth a doc visit.

It could be a medical issue, and may be worth a visit to his doctor to discuss. Otherwise I’m afraid it does sound like he’s under the influence of some kind of substance.

My son, who is now an adult, is like this. Depression and sleep apnea contribute. If it isn't drugs, then he should look into both sleep issues and mental health issues.

You accompany him to the doctor. He could have a brain tumor.

For the past few months my husband has to be asleep by 9:30. If he tries to stay up till 10 he will fall asleep whenever he is. Once asleep he cannot be woken. There could be sirens, gun shots, fireworks, and he would not wake up. If I were to need him to wake him in the middle of the night to help with the kids and did get him awake he would be so delirious it wouldn’t safe for him to help. He wakes up at 7, goes into work around 9 and gets off around 5-5:15. He says he isn’t physically exhausted but mentally from his job. Our oldest goes to sleep at 8:30 and it’s ruining our evenings because by 9pm it’s like talking to a drunk person. Is this normal?
