If everyone living in the Deal boundary would start caring about other schools and demanding improvements, the problem would be solved. But they don't, so they're stuck with the crowding.

What’s going on at Deal is absolutely criminal. The school’s current enrollment is 50% larger than it was just seven years ago (from just over 1000 in 2011 to just over 1500 in 2018). Each individual grade at Deal enrolls approximately 500 students, which is 40% larger than the average whole school enrollment at other middle schools (approximately 300 students). And DME forecasted enrollment for Deal by 2025 is expected to be as high as 2253 students. OOB feeder rights HAVE to end, like next year.

Because there are going to be 25,000 more kids. For fifty years DC has had boatloads of extra capacity, boundaries could be ignored because there was plenty of space. That extra capacity is going away.

There were hardly any changes the last time. The overcrowded schools got no relief, and the mostly empty ones werent closed. Why would the next time be any different?

Yes. I was ashamed of our community's reaction. A more economically diverse school is a good thing for my child and I am proud to be a part of making it great. Oh, but your realtor promised it would never change...

Boundary review isn't going to fix the looming crisis.

The projection in the DME MFC is for the city to increase the number of kids by about 25% by 2027, adding about 25,000 kids.

According to the MFC, right now DCPS has 61,925 seats and 48,043 students. By 2027 DCPS will have 61,697 students. Overall utilization will be 99.6%.

However, it won't be well spread at all. The center city and west of Rock Creek will be severely underserved. East of the Anacostia and the eastern part of the city will have thousands of empty seats in middle schools and high schools.

You do realize that redrawing boundaries means you are at risk of losing YOUR school. All of Lafayette sent to Ida B. Wells and so forth. Some WOTP residents are going to be unhappy.

My kids we early education the last time around so will be well into middle/high school the next go through.

The process brought out the worst ugliness in my neighbors/neighborhood. I am glad I will be watching from the sidelines next time.

It strikes me that there are many changing dynamics in schools with pressing issues for boundary review across the city. How much longer do we need to wait for the process to start?
