Generally people refer to it as Illinois, but there are tons of times the abbreviation is used.

Yes. Extremely well known and highly regarded. Your CMU engineering friend must be living under a rock.

I with others, never heard the University of Illinois main campus in urbana-champaign referred to as UIUC, and perhaps you are thinking of the less well known University of Illinois Chicago, which is typically referred to as UIC, and is less well known but has some strong programs. The University of Illinois everyone would have heard of so long as they have heard of Illinois.

when my friend did not know what UIUC was, I elaborated the school name.
her immediate reaction was if it was a state school and she never heard it as a strong engineering school.
But from now on, I will try to use the common name of school instead of abbreviation.

They have a classic tee shirt with the word “Illinois” arched across the chest that is very recognizable. I agree that people might be confused by you using initials instead of the name. Just “Illinois” is fine- you don’t even need to add the city names because it’s the main campus.

I went there and I've never had anyone tell me that they have never heard of it. But, I normally refer to it as "The University of Illinois" or the "U of I'.

I know it is a very good school. I think UIUC is better than GaTech for computer science.
Many people seem like they do not know the school in Nova area.

A UMD computer science TA did not know UIUC.
can't believe that my friend from CMU did not know UIUC. she seems to know Purdue and UMich though.

I think it's the UC part that throws people off a bit.
