The profit horizon for any company is this: Create a desirable product that is profitable. 2) Increase profits by growing your sales base (marketing, expansion, etc.) 3) Eventually you reach cant grow sales base anymore so your grow profits by cutting costs. 4) Eventually the value proposition goes away for consumers, close business.

Occasionally I find professional basics at Brooks Brothers premium lines or Saks or Lafayette 148 that are good quality but you have to look carefully.
People on this board rave about Boden but I think a lot of their stuff is weird florals and cheesy stripes and it isn’t exactly professional.

I just bought my first interview suit in decades. My old go-to in the corporate world was Ann Taylor, so that's where I went first. I was appalled--cheap fabrics and terrible fit.

Sigh. Add J Crew to the list of garbage clothes that once were decent.
In college I bought a DKNY 100% silk chifffon sleeveless dress at TJ Maxx, it even came with a silk slip (not poly lining). I haven’t seen silk in TJ Maxx in a couple decades.

Agreed. LOFT especially went downhill fast. I worked there in 2006 and I still have a really nice lined wool skirt. Now it’s just the same boxy polyester and cotton that looks like a rag after one wash.

This is happening for most brands, unfortunately, as companies find ways to make cheaper clothes for less.
One important point to think about: plastic microbeads that are ingested by fish and then ingested by us. They come in part from clothing made from artificial plastic fibers that disintegrates in the soil and water.
Please vote with your money and choose natural fibers whenever possible!
