She means preschool

Preschool is part-day. Daycare is full day.

We started our daughter in Catholic K early - she missed he cutoff by 18 days. The school really didn’t give us any trouble - no testing necessary, even. She’s in MCPS 7th now (switched in 6th) and doing just fine socially and academically, although she’s prob the smallest kid in her class. No regrets here. And it was awesome to have the extra $$ (school was much cheaper than daycare).

Send her to K and if she struggles then have her repeat. I'd do a private K as it will probably prepare her better. We did private through 2nd to avoid the MCPS birthday issue and then transferred in 2nd. It hasn't been an issue as academics have been really slow.

I have seen it work for girls but not as well for boys. A September baby myself, I had no problem entering at 5 and graduated at 16.

She would have to test in. It’s not a choice. The extent of your choice is whether you try to test in. Your other alternative is private for kindergarten.

Preschool. Definitely.

Our DS was advanced and the school recommended he skip K. It was the right decision until about 5th grade, when puberty started hitting classmates. It was a rough few years of bullying and feeling left behind. Then in high school he caught up.

It was never a question of academics. It was purely a social issue. He’s fine now, but it made middle school, which is a rough time anyway, even rougher. If I had a do over, I wouldn’t put my kid in a position to be the youngest in the class.

You would have to apply to have her start early and she’s have to take a test to see if she qualifies. You don’t get to just choose to start her early.

That being said, I don’t regret starting my September birthday DS on time one bit. Think of the long game, not the short game.

We had a similar situation, different school district. It wasn’t easy to have your kid start early - had to already read, needed a psychologist eval, etc. We ended up waiting.

Don’t consider the financial aspect at all. This is about her well being for the next 13 years. I know it’s tempting, but try to put that out of your mind as you weigh the choice.

Suck it up and pay the additional year of preschool. It will be better for your child.

She's going to miss the cutoff for MoCo for getting into K at age 5 as of 9/1. The preschool costs $1500 a month. She's bright but maturity level is about average, so I guess she'll be a bit more immature compared to the classmates if we start her early. Any advice?
