If they make some funky latte, I'd consider a tip. If they pour coffee into a cup for me or, even better, just had me a cup so I can fix my own, NFW am I tipping you for your overpriced coffee.

That aside, I had a barista who would frequently smile and make conversation with me AND give me free stuff (e.g. extra shots, large size when I ordered medium, extra cookies). I assumed she didn't give all customers free stuff and interpreted that as a sign that she liked me, but maybe she was angling for bigger tips too?

I think it's okay to ask a coffee shop employee out ONE time, respectfully, and if she says no receive it gracefully and keep it brief and coffee-focused thereafter. If you think you're the kind of guy who would make it weird if you continued to show up in her place of work by staring at her, making bad jokes about the time you asked her out, asking her out again, etc - DON'T DO IT.
