Subject: Link to Grandfathering to Deal?
Per PDFs, Deal grandfathering goes to 2022-23, so yes to 2018-19 2nd graders not to the younger ones.

# the boundary up where everybody cares about keys on which side of Arkansas Ave you live on. West and you’re in until 2022-23, east and you’re just out.
#The line then runs up to Georgia near Farragut. Again west of Georgia in until 2022-23, east out. Then west of Georgia up to and south of Kennedy over to 16th
For the few who live west of 16th you’re still in but . . .
# Above Kennedy and east of 16th (and south of Walter Reed), you’ve never been in the Deal boundary and you don’t get in pending a policy change in the future.

Assuming that the language / example in this link are outdated:
"students NOT currently attending a DCPS school and who DO NOT have a sibling in a DCPS school:
• Starting in SY 2015-16, your child will have the right to attend only the newly assigned DCPS school."

If you want to enroll your child in Deal - it appears you might be able to through 2022.

Deal has Feeder Rights to Wilson. If you are IB and attend Deal - you have rights to EITHER enroll in the feeder pattern to Wilson OR your boundary school.

So my kids are in charters now. if I bought or rented a house this summer on what it says on the school boundary DCGIS site, was zoned for West, Deal, AND Macfarland, and the HS is Roosevelt, could I send my kids to Deal and then Wilson? How does this work?

Not sure exactly what these requirements mean, but I just checked for my soon to be 6th grader who lives in 16th Street Heights (with me!) and attends a charter. She was listed as having the right to attend Deal without having to put it on the lottery. So technically we have until August 26 to decide if she will go to Deal or her charter midddle school.

The way I read it is - if you had rights to Deal. Current 2nd grader will maintain rights to Deal - EVEN if not enrolled in DCPS and coming from private or a charter.
But - it also says 3 to 4 years after the middle school opens. So MacFarland opened in 2016 - so 2020 would be 4 years. Is there a chance that DCPS changes their policy? Or would you be OK going with this?
MacFarland opened in 2016, but only for the Spanish bilingual program. So I don't think that would be considered the actual opening as a neighborhood school. Regardless, the boundaries will probably not be revisited until the 2022 boundary review.

It will be reconsidered in 2022 in a boundary review based on the 2020 census.
That could also be changed earlier if some politician wanted to take a bold stand/shoot themselves in the foot.

I can't find it - a friend is looking to buy IB for West and I thought they used to have the option of Deal and were grandfathered?
