I don’t know if you can trace the SUV owner’s name through their license plate number. But I know your insurance company and the police can. If they don’t leave you their contact info, they’re asking for an insurance claim against them and or a visit from the police.

I don't even call the person. I have my insurance company call them.

Call your insurance broker to file a claim.

Call the person who left the note to thank them and let them know that your insurance company may be contacting them.

The broker will then have someone from another department contact you to take a statement. The point is to ascertain who is at fault to determine which party needs to pay your deductible to fix the car.

If you are going to fix the car out of pocket, you don't need to do anything but take it to a garage.

Can I get info about a car owner from just the license plate number? Or is that lookup info only for DMV and police?

Call the person and thank them and let them know you’ll be calling the police and insurance and they will probably be getting a call for their statement. Then call the police, then your insurance.

I’ve left notes before and had the police follow up.

Call the insurance. Find out what they need. My guess is a police report, and official statement from witness just in case. Police may press charges or do something with license plate. I’d start with insurance.

How hard is this? You call the person, get their info, thank them profusely and then you call your insurance company. They handle the rest.

Who and what order do you call people? The notes says “we witnessed [car make & license #] hit you. Here’s our phone ##”. My car has minor body damage. Not a door or bumper ding. It’s a 2019 new and expensive car, fwiw.
