Basically they are getting attention and validation from an attractive woman without "crossing the line" into physical infidelity.
Men need affection, too. Just like sex, if they're not getting it from the wife, they'll seek it elsewhere.
In fact, I once read that in situations with high priced escorts, the men don't necessarily want sex, just someone to talk to.
Ok then these guys don’t have any friends??? Because that’s what friends are for?
Guy here (though not one having an emotional affair). Some topics are not typical guy conversation, but can definitely be discussed with a woman.

I have found that the ones that want to chat are:
--Married and chatting in the basement or at work. They are looking for an emotional affair and have no plans on meeting.
--Separated, or newly divorced, and chatting as an entry point back into serious dating.
--Divorced/Single and keeping you on hold because there is someone else that they are more interested in.
If a man is serious and really likes you, the relationship will advance rather effortlessly.

Is it possible they're contemplating a divorce so wanted to 'test the water' and see how they might fare in today's dating world? Doesn't make it right but not necessarily looking for an emotional affair.
Yes, i posted that and i think it's true. Sounds like that's what you are doing?
Guys new to the dating scene need to realize that DC is a very tough market to gain new experience. Since there are so many teaveling businessmen, you really need to do a 180 at least a year before thinking about dating. Especally if you want casual, or transitional, relationships. The market is flooded with older divorced men looking for just sex.
