But UVA and UMD are great right. USC has transformed itself and no matter how many old people disparage it...its very hard to get into, popular and has smart kids 18-23 or so. The actual students...So much hate or old info

I think this college and all colleges will be extra vigilant in accepting only those that meet the criteria - who applied and excelled in school and took their studies seriously.

What I wouldn’t want is for my kid to be around vapid, snobby California YouTubers. Please tell me if this is a good fit for a local. The surrounding neighborhood also concerns me but isn’t this common?

If it's basically a school where you send your kid to party and rub shoulders with rich kids w/o the expectation of actually getting an education...then I would call that more of a country club than a university. I'm guessing that there must be some serious students there who actually value their educations and truly work hard to earn their degrees.

DD had USC on her list of grad schools she planned on applying to next year. The scandal made the school go from a definite apply to a maybe apply. Though, I just read about the student who was killed, & that was really terrible. And I think there is way more to come out about the bribery scandal. If the guy potentially helped out helped out 700 families, mostly Californians, USC probably has more students that bribed their way in. It's a popular school for LA's elite.

And the neighborhood it is in is worse than Berry-era Anacostia.

Obviously, when certain people are bribing their way into a school, paying others to attend class for them and take their exams then the average hard working kid who does everything honestly is going to be at a huge disadvantage and paying good $$$$ to attend class in a rigged environment. I'm not familiar with USC and I don't want to paint everyone there with a broad brush because I do not think that's fair at all. But if there is a cheating ring at that school it should be dealt with.

I think I'd want to hear how this all pans out with the cheating scandal before applying to USC. If there is a network of cheating at the school with unqualified applicants gaining admission via bribes and students paying other people to attend class/take tests for them that would certainly influence my kid's decision to apply to that school

Of course it's not going to devalue a degree from there. Only a handful of kids cheated their way into the school. Do you really think people are going to assume your kid was one of them?

It depends on what major obviously and where they want to be after graduation, for the price. On the west coast and in California it is still a very strong brand name. As embarrassing as all of this over the last several years has been, its still a top school with a lot of resources and a beautiful campus/social life. If your kid really likes the school I wouldn’t let this deter. Have you visited? I graduated 10 years ago and the amount of development poured in since is kind of nuts. What college has a Trader Joe’s / core power yoga in the university village? the surrounding neighborhood is not great, but where the recent shooting happened is not really in the heart of where students live so that would not be a real concern, as long as your kid has good judgement.

But yes - We are all ashamed of the utter incompetence of university and athletic leadership

Will be interesting to see how this falls out for USC. Either people spurn it because of the scandal or applications increase because it is now established that the school is prestigious enough parents are willing to risk jail time to get their kid in.
