Just yesterday Gov Hogan helped Gov Christie sell his book to the fine people of Maryland.

The issue is that board members of a non profit institution were clearly lining each other's pockets. UMMS agreed, for god knows what reason, to buy 100,000 copies of Pugh's self published book for $500,000. There are a few issues with this. 1) what was the point of this? The books were not solicited by any programs or the schools, 2) 100,000 is a huge volume of books. Very, very few actually professionally published authors come anywhere close to that kind of run, 3) and last and most damning, where are the books? Baltimore Sun is saying at least 50,000 copies can't be traced. Implication is that they were never published.

This is quite different from Chris Christie's book. Or Hillary Clinton's books.

+1. Baltimore is an utter embarrassment.

I loved this Reddit post where someone was curious how many books they need to buy to get their deck permit approved. Someone did the math.

So by this logic, if we're working of the Kaiser model, we have (20,000 books/$48,000,000 contract) = $2,400 contract dollars per $5 book (the going UMMS rate, Kaiser actually paid ~$5.70 per book).

We're also assuming that each book ordered equals a book delivered, which we know not to be the case. Of the 100,000 books ordered by UMMS, she only delivered around 80,000 books. This means that the actual going rate of a book may be as high as $6.25.

That said, if you order 5 books at $5 a pop to cover the permitting costs of a $12,000 deck and your biggest issue is that you didn't receive your 5th Healthy Holly book, you're doing it wrong.

Plus, your permit shouldn't cost the city anything other than the labor costs of reviewing it, so the cost to the city would be very very low, unless you're contracting the city to do the entire construction project. So if you buy $25 worth of Healthy Holly books, the City should not only permit but also construct your $12,000 deck.

The permitting alone should be all set if you just buy roughly 1-2 pages of 1 healthy holly book.

She's taking a leave of absence, but no worries..... she is still getting paid.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, facing a call by Gov. Larry Hogan for a criminal investigation into a book deal worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, announced Monday that she will take an indefinite leave of absence because of her health.

The Democratic mayor’s office issued a statement Monday saying she had been advised by her doctors to take time to recover from a bout of pneumonia that hospitalized her for five days last week.

“With the mayor’s health deteriorating, she feels as though she is unable to fulfill her obligations as mayor of Baltimore city,” the statement read in part. “To that end, Mayor Pugh will be taking an indefinite leave of absence to recuperate from this serious illness.”

The statement did not address the scandal over the books — a series featuring a young girl named Healthy Holly aimed at promoting exercise and good diet — that has quickly overtaken the mayor. A no-bid deal with the University of Maryland Medical System was first reported by The Baltimore Sun last month.

City Solicitor Andre Davis confirmed Pugh’s leave will start at midnight and that the mayor will continue to be paid her $185,000 annual salary.
