From your list, my DD really liked the University of Washington. Other big schools she liked included Michigan, Berkeley, McGill and the University of Toronto.

In some ways I agree, but I suspect for a very different reason. I agree that there are plenty of fantastic OOS public universities. But, in this area, I think in-state options are at least as good in nearly every area. In most cases, it would be hard to justify paying much more to go OOS, unless admission to flagship is an issue (which is a valid concern), or even IS tuition is too high for a very high stat kid who might be able to get serious merit elsewhere.

My DC was more taken with Ohio State than expected. Columbus is on the upswing and yet there is a definite campus within the city.

Pitt was second favorite among big universities.

Decided to apply to mostly SLACs, however.

Florida.

Great big campus experience. Beautiful, great weather, tons to do, every major under the sun.

But it's not easy to get into anymore.

Pitt - some programs are world class - Biomedical sciences in particular, engineering school is very good. Fun area of the city (Oakland). Pittsburgh is an amazing city, but there’s still a campus.

UGA - honors college is amazing. Offers great scholarships to high stats kids. Athens is a fun college town, but not really super near to Atlanta (good or bad).

We have no regrets about Minnesota.

Daughter is thriving in the engineering school. Access to major seems probable, which is about as good as you can hope with a big ten engineering school (it is pretty hard, and my daughter is middle of the pack right now),

Yes, it is cold.

My kid wanted the big college thing and felt that the way private’s are more intense about not letting you fail to be claustrophobic. Some people really want the distance.

When we toured, I was not impressed with the UC schools. Budget woes were too apparent.

We have visited many OOS publics over the past year and our DD is considering a few in her final list.

We visited: UGA, UNC, NC State, VT, JMU, College of Charleston, Miami Ohio, Clemson, South Carolina, Delaware, Pitt.

Out of this list favorites are VT, Miami Ohio, Pitt, JMU and Delaware.

Only ones she did not really like were South Carolina, Charleston and UGA.

My junior definitely wants the big college campus experience. There are so many and reviews are pretty positive for most. He is thinking, Florida, Ohio, Washington, Indiana, Minnesota, Arizona, South Carolina, Colorado.

Anyone happy they sent their kids to a big OOS school instead of local or private? Some great merit options out there for some. I think that is where I will be leading him towards. Any opinions or “been there” reviews appreciated.
