OP here. I was able to find someone but, we will have a 10 day gap in meds. Trying to find out if the pediatrician will help.

What do they charge for an intake and medical management visit? I looked at their website and fees are not posted.

Is there a particular psychiatrist there works well with children?

You fill out the intake form online, and a psychiatrist is assigned to a new patient. Cannot comment on fees, as it has been a while for us. You can call and ask.

I am trying to find one locally who accepts our insurance. The situation has been quite stable -- same meds for a year. Would it be ok to ask the pediatrician? Or should I just bite the bullet at pay out of pocket for the Dr?

(DD runs out of the Adderall next weekend).

Your pediatrician can give you a prescription until you find another psychiatrist. however, I've been trying to get an appointment with an in-network child psychiatrist for 3 years and haven't found out yet that is taking new patients. We go to an out-of-network psychiatrist and I get reimbursed about 50% from my insurance. It's expensive and sad that there are no few in network psychiatrists and psychologists.

The problem is not the reimbursement, it is the deductible. I will have to pay the deductible twice this way.

Our pediatrician also was willing to prescribe meds. however, DC does not do well with stimulants and the pediatrician wanted us to try different stimulants. DC is now seeing a child psychiatrist who was much more familiar and comfortable with prescribing non-stimulants.

Would that be the general pediatric clinic or the psychiatry clinic in Northern VA?

It seems to depend on the pediatrician - puts was not comfortable prescribing and the psychiatrist we use doesn’t take our insurance. It’s not ideal, but we like the doctor and the location works for us. If your pediatrician won’t prescribe they may be able to suggest other psychiatrists in the area that might be more convenient for you.

My son’s pediatrician would and did prescribe stimulants. He referred us to a psychiatrist to explore anti depressants, though. I’d definitely try the pediatrician. Even though ours wouldn’t manage care for depression and anxiety, he did offer to do what he called a “bridge” prescription for an anti depressant. A short term prescription, recognizing it takes quite awhile to get in with a psychiatrist.

I think it is fine to ask pediatrician for the coming month as I doubt you can get in to see anyone prior, however, I would make an appt with another psychiatrist ASAP for going forward.

Our Psychiatrist has retired and referred us to one in Gaithersburg (we live in Vienna). This is not workable with DC traffic.
