NP here. Our ped says you often see a growth spurt (height) in advance of the onset of first period. I sure hope this is true. Our 11.5 yr old has public hair & breast buds but needs to grow!!!!

It’s a guideline, not a rule. There are always exceptions. I’m also curious about “very fine pubic hair.” My DD had sort of a thickening of peach fuzz far before she had pubic hair. I wonder if it’s that. I also don’t know how noticeable breast buds are for girls who grow into very flat chested women. At any rate, these timelines are averages and guidelines, so make sure your dd is prepared if she’s showing any of these signs because she might be starting her period soon.

I hope this is not taken the wrong way, but does anyone know if black girls and brown girls (darker latin, indian, native american, etc.) get their periods sooner? We are a south american family BTW, but caucasian/european descent from both sides. My MIL and my mother are convinced that darker skinned girls get their period's sooner than caucasian girls. I thought they were nuts, or grew up believing old wives tales. But now my daughter is 13 and her and her two white american friends haven't had their period while the 4 other girls in their group (all darker skinned) have had their periods since they were 11, two of them since they were 10. I wonder if there is statistical data about this. And why would that be? All 7 girls smart, well adjusted and are from supportive well off families. They have been friends since early elementary school.

For DD, I think she started developing breast buds/body odor/the likes around 10.5 or 11. She got her period a couple months before she turned 13. I would guess 1.5-2 years for your DD, though it's different for everyone.

My daughter is almost 11.5 and she just got hers today. It’s easily been about a year and a half since her first signs. She is already a B cup! I got mine before I turned 10, so I’m just glad it took a little longer for her.

My now 12 year old daughter got her period at 11 years 9 months. She had tiny breast buds, no odor. Our ped had just said a few months earlier that she had at least a year to go. We weren't expecting it so fast. She's fine though but extremely self-conscious. None of the 6th graders talk about it and I wish they would.

We just went to the dr yesterday for an annual visit and the ped gave us some general info on puberty. She said that once breast buds start to develop, it is general 2-2.5 years before a girl gets her period.

My short kid keeps sitting down and willing herself to grow taller!

I was just talking with her this morning about keeping supplies in her backpack.

I've read that it's generally two years from the first appearance of breast buds to starting menstruation.

We're about the same timeline, I noticed breast buds on my DD when she was about 10 year and 9 months (she's 11.5 now) so I started looking for this same information. We've talked about her period, read the American Girl Doll book together, etc. But I did want to be sure to have supplies in her backpack and just have her ready overall. At least as ready as a girl can be!

Our 10.5 year old daughter is beginning to develop breast buds and body odor (stinky if she doesn't wear deodorant if she's been running around). Just this week, I noticed signs of vaginal discharge in her underwear (no blood) while doing laundry.

I'm wondering if I can expect her periods to start in 6 months, 1 year, 1-1/2 years. Does anyone have any anecdotal data to share?

Hoping it's later!! i was 11.5 when i got mine.

We have a delayed 10 year check-up coming up, so I'll definitely asked the pediatrician too.
