Vet here. Was going to recommend helping hands in Richmond! Great place. Do not do anesthesia free dental for a dog whose mouth is that bad. Painful. They won’t do it anyway.

Yup us too! Worth the trip!

I take my dog to Richmond for cleanings every few years at Helping Hands. I like to support their mission and I appreciate that they are experts at surgery and dental cleanings. They have a low fixed price regardless of how many extractions have to be done. Plus, I get to spend the day hanging out in Richmond, which I really like.

Agree! There are so many issues with anesthesia free cleanings. As mentioned above, it it too stressful to most pets to have cleanings without anesthesia. My dog didn’t need extractions though, just a cleaning.

How old is your dog? What breed? We took in a 2 yr old shepherd rescue with horrible teeth - black hard crap on them. We should have taken a before picture.

We started her on Science Diet TD and weekly frozen femur bones. She didn't need a professional cleaning and they look awesome. We slowly cut back on the TD, got onto other kibble. She still gets a few TD a day. She's 6 and her teeth have stayed clean.

If your dog's plaque is below the gumline, she/he will probably need the professional cleaning.

Look into anesthesia free cleaning. Cost is about $200.

My dog definitely has teeth that need to be cleaned. I am embarrassed that I did not brush them. Vet wants over $1000 for teeth cleaning -- pre-op blood work, anesthiea, cleaning, antibiotics.

Anyone have any success doing something on their own? Would starting to brush now help? Any special toothpastes that would be super aggressive in cleaning?
