OP here:
We bought a fully loaded Subaru Outback. The fact that the XC40 comes standard with 2WD was a dealbreaker. We’d need to upgrade to a higher trim line ON the XC40 to get AWD and then we are looking at $45K car. It was a poor value proposition for us, given that we have a new baby and want a car we can drive into the ground over the next 10+ years.

That was really smart. Subaru's hold their value. I was going to add that an XC40 might feel too small in the back.

Are all Volvos now made in China?

Are all the XC40’s 2-toned? I’m not a fan of the ones I’ve seen so far.

XC40’s cargo space is a little small—wonder if can fit s dog the way my forester does...
(Although i May just keep the dog out of the new car, lol)

I'm also curious since we're looking at it and the x2 (and Mercedes gla) as well.

I contemplated the XC40 last summer but after test driving the XC60, I much preferred the XC60. I liked the size better and liked how it drove. I also was a little worried because it was the first model year for the XC40 and I like to wait to make sure they get the kinks out. I ultimately went with the Audi Q5 which is great but it really was a toss up between the Audi and the XC60. One thing I thought about was travel related. I am not in DC and there are many more Audi dealerships around my area than Volvo dealerships. I figured if something happened and I was out of town it would be easier to find an Audi dealership. Not a major factor for me but it was a consideration.

I felt safe (a huge fear/concern for me), had enough space for DH, DC, and me plus dogs and skis and luggage etc., and had a very smooth ride that worked almost as well as the Cadillac, which is generally smoother than almost any other car we've had. FWIW, I was hit twice while driving the Volvo, once from the side and once from the rear, and walked away without a scratch from both wrecks, as did DC and the dogs , and the car sustained minimal damage.

When we replace the Cadillac SUV, I'll most likely go back to the Volvo model, because you just can't beat it for safety and for longevity. You have to stay on top of the servicing and using premium fuel, but it's worth it, IMHO.

(PS As you've probably surmised, I'm a good bit older and went through a period where we traded cars somewhat regularly ... hence the number I've owned over the past 35 years....)

Thanks for your honest assessment. In what way was your XC 40 a "lemon"? How long ago?

I want to research any lemon issues, so please be specific if possible!

No joke, my current car is a 1999 Forester. I'll keep it for city errands and home repair stuff, I take public transportation to my office. We live in DC.

This new car will be DW's. She wants a nice car with AWD.

I’d buy a loaded crosstrek and put the difference in a 529

This car is kinda sexy, yet still practical.

Does anyone have one? DW wants an AWD smaller SUV, we have our first baby on the way.

Any reviews or personal experiences? How does it compare to the BMW X1 or X2? DW wants to test drive the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Outback, and the X1/X2. I think this car may also be a great candidate.

How is Volvo reliability and repair costs?
