Also, your daughter might like mastering the art of soviet cooking. It’s a family memoir and a quick, funny read but really captures the pros and cons of the Soviet experience, including the Stalin years.

Other possible films: Burnt By the Sun, about a family during the Great Purge.

Excellent movie.

A great read is "The Forsaken" by Tim Tzouliadis.

Oh, I love this movie.

On a similar note, there was a recent movie titled “Bitter Harvest” about the famine (golodomor = death by starvation) in Ukraine. I don’t think Stalin himself is in the movie, or if he is it’s very episodic, but he was the one who engineered the whole thing.

Ha ha! It's a great film. Probably not one to watch to inform oneself about the whole of Stalin's life. It is, after all, about his death, and he only makes an appearance in the first 20 minutes of the film.

But it would be a good film to watch after watching something else about Stalin. Very dark and gets at the horrible absurdity of a murderous dictatorship.

I just taught about Stalin in my World 2 class and we watched some of this documentary.

I didn't see the entire thing, but the part we watched were very interesting (and sad).

The 1992 HBO movie with Robert Duvall as Stalin was pretty good.

16 y.o. DD doing a report, and I thought it would be a learning opportunity and hopefully also an entertaining family activity if we all watched something on his regime. Any suggestions?
