Come on, OP. You don't hate it. Perhaps it gives you a sense of being busy to say you just have to take on this project, for your child that's damn near a teenager.

That’s ridiculous, OP. I buy the stuff with DS’s input and then he addresses them and attaches them to candy. He’s in 1st grade. Why is your 5th grades not doing it???

Your kid should be doing it and there is no need for candy. If kid wants candy, kid can tape it on.

Your kid should be doing it! If they aren’t into it, then just buy some cheap ones at CVS, have them put their names on it, and have them tape a piece of candy to each one. It’s not that big of a deal!

5th grade you shouldn’t be doing it.
I was doing myself I think by third, and I’m pretty sure I was a very late reader/ writer.

5th grade? Take your kid to the store, tell your kid to pick out Valentine's Day cards + candy, drive home and tell your kid to sign the cards and tape the candy to a Valentine for each kid on the list. Done.

I used to be you. Now, I buy them, and let my children do the rest.

You are doing it wrong. My 4 yo does everything herself and make very fancy cards. Buy card stock, let them cut, glue gems, stickers, etc. she has her class list and handles the whole thing. She is super proud.

Valentine's Eve is for me as Christmas Day is for my husband (writing cards/taping candy--putting toys together).

It’s always been optional at my kids’ school. This year my fifth grader wasn’t interested but my second grader still is. It’s really not a big deal, if we just get a pack of 24 cards with candy attached and kid addresses them.

We’re minimalists. Cards from CVS, they sign their names, that’s it. I admire the crafty people, but we’re not those people.

It's one of the last vestiges of an earlier time. I've got two kids and, although the valentines are often last minute, we do them and the kids like them. I'm happy to continue the tradition.
