To reiterate. I made 282k. That is not our HHI. DH works as well.

We grew up semi poor with 6 kids. Only vacations we ever had were camping because my parents never had extra money for real ones. Family cars would always be used ones. Although my parents never had money for nice things, we never did without. Unfortunately there was no money to send us to college.

Fast forward to now and my 5 siblings are in the same situation as my parents. I on the other hand have a great higher paying government job along with plenty of money in the bank and no financial issues. Makes for awkward times when I’m around my family. And no, I never mention finances in front of them.

Grew up poor. This year may hit HHI 400k. I worry a lot about money and really do not feel comfortable to splurge on luxury.

Poor immigrant here. Free lunch in a rural county in the south until college, which was partially subsidized by the PELL grant. GS-15 now (150k). DH just got a raise to $200k/year. Including our rental income, our HHI is close to $400k, but I still have a lot of anxiety about money. DH grew up solidly middle class and is probably expecting an inheritance, so we have different perspectives about spending, which is a challenge in our marriage.

I’m working on learning to bring thankful for everything I have, while still striving for more. I’m unhappy in my current job/career path, but I know I am very lucky to be where I am.

We grew up LMC, both with dads unable to hold jobs and a workaholic mother who earned money and raised kids while the dad was checked out (depressio, alcoholism, etc).

We both work and I make more than DH, GS15 & GS14 (his agency has flatter compensation where stopping st GS14 makes way more sense). He is very involved as a dad, and we split activites and pickup and drop up, and chores.

We have a nice life, with enough money (not quite enough for around here if we want good commutes) but I am anxious about going to single breadwinner after seeing our dads careers crater suddenly. And he doesn’t want to be a SAHD b/c he feels it will be very isolating.

I’m a SAH and my husband is a lobbyist. He makes a lot of money, even for this area. It is definitely weird to go from poor to upper middle class. The best part is giving my kids a childhood of stability and free from worry, abuse, tension, and scarcity.

Wow, what a good soul your sister is. I hope you are still close to her and treat her to things she otherwise wouldn't have.
