Yes, policy wonks are not too interesting. Smile more, and laugh. I am the PP above who married a fellow writer. This is why I didnt want to date some of other guys, though in truth, they would have been cool, too. (and I would have been a lot richer, ha!)

Agreed it's the same style. I think the difference may be in her "polish" and how she carries herself. Wear more makeup?/ Style your hair? i say this as a married woman who wanted to attract more of the unemployed writer type (and I did!) Score! I dated, but broke up with, lawyers, doctors and IT. There's a self-selection process going on. If you want to attract the former, dress like their catnip!

Op here. I don’t dress too differently from my friend. She is more polished and puts more effort into her looks. She’ll never leave the house without hair and makeup. I often go to brunch in no makeup and natural hair.

I don’t understand how I’m attracting the hipsters and underachievers. I am well spoken, a lot more “sophisticated” than said friend in that I read a lot and am a policy wonk. She is simply...very pretty and into makeup and social climbing.

I think both of your styles are cute.

You should definitely be able to attract someone in the upper middle class league like a lawyer/it/engineer.

From what I’ve seen sometimes the trust fund guys can be wily about marriage (if that’s your goal) and fully expect to sign a pre-nup.

She’s a product and your a product. Her “packaging” says preppy and country club casual. Your “packaging” says laid back and hip. You each attract different buyers.

I suspect you project a hipster or nerd vibe, and so that's who hits on you.

If you project a preppy / trust fund vibe - and are pretty / sophisticated - that's who you'll start to attract, too.

She is like catnip for them. Everyone who shows interest in her is preppy and a trust funder. The kinds of guys who go to galas. She isn’t from that background at all but I guess she styles herself a certain way. Sleek straight hair, pearl earrings. Big shiny white smile. She is also really pretty.
