Yeah I'm confused about a maintenance closet that is off a bedroom. That seems weird to me.

I'd also want to know the rules for access to it by other people (ie: they need to give me 24 hours heads up). And I'd want to know if I could hang a tapestry or something over the door, because I would.

With your previous experience, no — of course not. You’d probably be worried about it constantly. Why put yourself through that?

Where do you think this alleged mini camera would be? On the door hinge? On the vent (which is usually ground level)?

Get one of the door-sized (Fat Head decals for example) posters and hang it up on the door to cover any pinholes you think might be there.

Most apartments do not allow the residents to mess around with the furnace and water heater. If you need to fix or adjust something, you have to call them to come and do it.

Except in many apartment, those things aren't in the apartment unit itself and certainly not in a closet off a bedroom.

Yes, I would. Wouldn’t even think twice.

OP, what is your exact concern? That the maintenance people will have a chance to put cameras in your kids' room, because they'll have an excuse to go in there? Wouldn't that be true for any apartment you rent, regardless of where the maintenance closet is?

Nope

I agree that cameras wouldn't be part of my fear, although I understand your concern since you've dealt with creepy behavior before. My first concern would be possible noise that comes from the air handler and water heater behind the door. My second concern might be excess dust and pollution that comes from the air handler. It could make for a noisy and dusty room for you kids.

^^^ also cameras don't enter in to it for me. i don't want anyone traipsing through my kids' room unless I called them to come fix something.

I would not rent an apartment that has a maintenance closet inside my apartment.

I have lived in a lot of rentals and apartments and I like 24 hour notice to enter. I also don't want a door that goes somewhere else that we don't use. That is taking up my wall space! You can't put furniture there, nothing.

Just NO.

In the kids room?

Background: we once rented where a maintenance man installed illegal cameras in bathrooms.

I know chances are slim that anything would happen but it is inaccessible to us as residents.
