I'm not sure what criteria you are using to suggest that it is "below" the other schools, particularly, Wisconsin, which is also a great school, but not appreciably different. In academics, they each have several world-renowned programs. In student body ACT 25-75 UM 26-31, UW 27-31. Just about identical.
A kid who is comfortable with a large (and cold) school could get a world-class education at either.

One has a lake and the other a river.

Admissions officer told us last year they’ve been impressed with the kids from VA. Applied early, admission decision came quickly, followed by invites to honors college and a scholarship. We appreciated the love but she wanted a small LAC.

No one cares about the opinion of one snotty teen. OP asked for information about the school. If you don't have something helpful to add, please scroll on by.

As a practical matter, there are real differences among how the different flagships run their schools. "Best" in terms of selectivity isn't the only measure of how to choose one over the other. UMN-TC does direct admits to the different colleges, with majors chosen within the college later based on the college's rules. The UCs do direct admits to impacted majors, with is great if you know exactly what you want to do, not so great if you change your mind along the way. UW-Madison doesn't do direct admits to the business school or the engineering school (the engineering answer is tricky). Newspaper reports describe the UC system and the UW system as cash strapped over the last bunch of years. UMN-TC press about money has been better (except for recent increases in OOS tuition, which is a bummer). Which model is right for any given student is a matter of preference. And yes, UMN-TC is highly regarded internationally.

Job fair info. Maybe this will help? I know the school is good about supporting coop programs and study abroad. I know a lot of the kids want to stay in the Midwest, which depresses wage stats, but my family thinks staying in the Midwest is a great idea.

My kid is there and loving it. She is in CSE. Not many DMV kids. We have been Impressed so far and enjoy the separate administration of the different colleges, but ymmv because liberal arts is much bigger/different than engineering.

The twin cities are great fun. It is easy to get around town. They call Minnesota the “Canada of the US” which is true. People are really nice and friendly. It is cold, but with the exception of the occasional polar vortex, very manageable. The grad Econ dept is highly regarded.

It is definitely very white, as is the state. Most kids are from MN, IL, WI and SD.

If you are seriously interested, put down the $50 now to reserve housing (separate from admissions) as the dorms fill up. (This is probably good advice at many big ten schools).

Anyone have feedback on this school? DC is thinking of a political science or economics major. TIA!
