In the DMV area there are tons of charging stations for all Evs everywhere. We have never had a problem finding a charger ever.

Test drive the new leaf e plus. I have a 2018 left and I liked it better than the Chevy Bolt... Except for the range, but that rarely matters.

I just went through this and ended up with a 2018 Prius. I love it and I've been averaging about 65mpg. We ended up going with Toyota based on the reliability of our last Toyota vehicle. My husband's company car is a Chevy and it has had problem after problem after problem and it's only 5 years old. Our last Toyota went 9 years and 170k miles needing just regular maintenance, it would have gone a lot longer if an idiot hadn't hit my husband and totalled it. It was a Toyota Yaris and my husband came out of it without any injuries and it was a nasty accident. Safety was also a reason we chose Toyota.

We just replaced our 2006 Prius for a 2016 Volt and I am LOVING it so far! Been four weeks and I have yet to go to a gas station. Best of all is the amazing torque/pickup. Soooo much more fun to drive than the Prius. Only downside is that you get less charge in colder weather.

Look at the Honda Clarity; is plug in with fuel tank backup. I Ike Honda’s track record for reliability, and they were offering tax rebates, not sure if still are.

PS Volt is a plug in hybrid— like the plug in Prius but maybe with longer range? The Bolt is the pure EV.

Tesla has its own network and everyone else basically uses other networks. Tesla had the best network for coast to coast driving but the non-Tesla (CCS) network around here and on the east coast generally is good and getting better quickly.

FYI If you are ok with the Ioniq’s range you should look at the Leaf. I’ve heard some reviewers prefer it to the Bolt.

Nissan is also coming out with an extended range Leaf any day/month now. I think they were quiet about it to avoid cannibalizing current Leaf sales, and then the CEO was arrested....

Many dealers will not sell to a VA address if the car is being sold in MD and other ZEV states— I think because the automaker only gets credits for complying with CA ZEV standards if the car is sold and registered in a ZEV state.

OP here. I considered the Volt but I wonder if the fact that they are stopping production will create issues for maintenance? Is that silly? I will check out the Bolt.

For the 17:32 poster - are you in CA? I was under the impression it would be in CA imminently, and in certain other states eventually (hopefully this year). I think MD was one of the “eventually” states but there was no expectation it would ever be in VA.

We have had a Chevy Bolt for a year and it is a pretty great car. Honestly, after a little while we forgot that it is "special." DH enjoys finding new free places to charge it.

Chevy Bolt or Chevy Volt. Bolt is all electric with 200+ mile range. Volt is electric 50 miles, then has an engine to generate more power.

Volt is going out of production in March so good deals to be had. Pretty good deals on a Bolt too.

They're underpriced because they have a Chevy not Tesla badge on them.

I am getting ready to replace my 2004 Prius. What do people think are the best options in the hybrid or fully electric space?

I like having a smaller car and if it's a hybrid, I'd like for it to be in the 45-50 MPH range. That probably rules out any hybrid SUVs.
I don't think my DH will support me getting a Tesla... based on price and concerns about the company.
Hyundai Ioniq is a strong contender, but now I'm hearing amazing things about the Hyundai Kona EV... which will not be availbable here until ??????
If I go EV, I like the idea of the Kona because the range will be 250 miles per charge. The Ioniq is more like 120. That's an argument in favor of a plug-in hybrid but those seem like transitional technology.

In an ideal world I'd wait til I could get a Kona (maybe later this year in MD?? We live in VA and I don't think they're ever planning to sell them here). But i'm not sure the Prius will last that long - it's got 180k miles and is running really rough right now.

Another Prius is also an option but I don't really like how the new ones look.
