The biggest cost is training though. I’ve become a training junkie, and take dog sport classes that are $200 every 6 weeks. Trials on the weekend are $75/day. I easily spend $2-3k a year on training costs, but it’s my hobby like most of have.

10-pound dog:

Fortunately, my dog doesn't need any special grooming. I bathe her in the laundry sink. As you dog gets a little older, you might need some regular health maintenance such as annual teeth cleaning ($200). My dog has this done every 2-3 years. I do have to take her to the vet to have her anal sacs expressed every few months ($20 each visit).

Annual cost for my 50lbs dog:

$700 food and occasional treats
$200 toys and living accessories (crate, brush/comb, harness, leashes, collars, etc)
$700 vet, tick med, heartworm med, vaccines, etc

I bought a Roomba ($250) and dog blow dryer ($200).

He has a medical condition necessitating expensive prescription food right now, but hopefully not for life.

His coat is high-maintenance and I groom him myself - don't trust the people in this area.

I stay home and we do not pay someone to walk him.

Her basic expenses are food ($75/mo for fancy stuff), meds ($20/mo for flea and heartworm) and kennel when we are both travelling ($50 mo on average but that could mean $300 in one month). Overall $1000-2000 year barring major health events (dental cleaning, etc). She is worth 100 times every cent, though.

This is a good place to start. Grooming will vary depending on breed. Food costs can also vary. You will also need to check with your vet to see prices of a yearly exam and vaccination schedule. Another thing to consider is boarding or sitter costs.
