The designer has spent well over 12 hours at various meetings over the last few months to review placement, style, and overall design. Since we didn’t opt for an outside designer, this has been invaluable. However, we’re doing an entire large kitchen, so going with CD was a reasonable option (and we compared other companies). With a small island as described, I’m not sure I’d spend the extra money.

+1. CD did our kitchen too and we had a wonderful experience. But OP your project is small. I'd go to Home Depot to see what they would charge.

We are definitely now looking at other options. We were really hoping to match the current cabinets/countertops and it appears the cabinets (Brighton) are only available through Cabinet Discounters. However, given the costs, we may just need to mirror the style (Shaker, thankfully) in a different color from another brand.

Have you thought about an online cabinet site such as Cliq Studios to save some money on the cabinets?

My contractor field built my island. I used 2-30" drawer base cabinets and matching panels that I bought from the cabinet place and bought a 6" pull out spice rack from HD that I placed in the middle that just needed the door for the front. I bought the 3 island legs I needed online and my contractor used paint grade 5/4x4 pine trim to make the apron (and supporting frame to support the quartz) at the knee space part of the island.

The legs and apron trim were all painted by him to match the cabinetry which was white. I saved a lot of money buying the legs and related wood apron pieces on my own. This is the site where I bought the legs. They have a really good selection in lots of different wood species. https://www.osbornewood.com/34-and-one-half-inches.aspx.

Your island doesn't have to be custom with a little thought putting all the parts and pieces together. The place where I bought my cabinets from were charging a lot of money for the legs.

Anonymous wrote:$2k for quartz for an island sounds absurdly high. You could probably get it cheaper through Home Depot.

They probably don't have that kind of island as a standard offering so you're basically commissioning a custom carpentry piece. I agree with PP that if you can DIY the island cabinetry and top it with a slab from a granite yard or HD, you'll save thousands. And it's a pretty simple project.

We are trying to match the current countertop which is Cambria. The $2k ($100/SF installed) quote was actually the lowest by far!

Thanks - we are looking at a do it yourself option now.

FWIW, this is close to the design: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f1/e2/3c/f1e23c42743f9b0414783988fff4774a.jpg

That just doesn’t seem like it should cost $6k but maybe my expectations are completely out of whack.

We want to add an island to our kitchen and got a quote from Cabinet Discounters because that is where the previous owners went. The price for the quartz countertop was reasonable- $2k for 21 SF with installation. The price for the cabinets, however, was so much higher than expected - almost $3k without installation or taxes. The base of the island is two 27inch base cabinets with paneling and legs along the back to create a 4 seat table (so most of the island is open space).

My husband sold kitchens while he was in grad school and designed our last kitchen, so we thought to had a decent handle on the cost. He also designed the island - the “designer” simply drew up a quote.

Clearly, Cabinet Discounters is higher much, much higher priced than we understood or our expectations, despite H’s experience is completely out of whack. Any advice or experience? We really wanted to match the current kitchen (Brighton cabinets) which it appears only Cabinet Discounters sells locally.
