My DD makes fairly elaborate Valentines for a few close friends. My son doesn't bother.

OP - here's the thing. Notwithstanding the advice you are getting here, middle school is a whole new ballgame. I know you want to be helpful, but you are going to have to start letting DD come to you. If Valentine's are a thing, let her figure it out, or whatever. Stop the helicoptering, you'll be much less stressed out otherwise.

The thread title should say "Stupid Mom of Tween". I first thought that you had a baby when you were 12, and then I thought you were calling your child "stupid".
Actually, nix the word "stupid", use "clueless" instead.

Nope. Send some nice packets of candy with the kid to hand to close friends.

Our school allows kids to buy flowers for each other during lunch. $1 for one carnation. It generates a decent profit for some clubs/PTA in school.
My kids just handed out ring-pops to their friends.

My 7th grader said she needed to purchase Valentine's - I assume they would be for her close friends. I forget what her friend group did last year - something similar I suppose. They just give each others Valentines.

I'll be happy to see the end of that "everyone must give a valentine to everyone" bullshit.

My DD is in 8th grade. She has never brought valentines in MS. She and her friends do bring candy in on V-day and give some to each other as a treat. MS is where things like halloween and valentines day stop being school-wide activities.

I am a middle school teacher and in sixth grade students have 8 different classes with 8 different teachers. There is no time to do stuff like that. Also, it would be very expensive buying valentines for over 100 people. Some of the girls usually just bring in candy for their closest friends.

We don't do valentines in our MS and I have never heard of valentines in MS. As a PP mentioned, there may be fund raisers.

At our MS, (MCPS) they do not give out valentunes. The SGA does sell candygrams at lunch as a fundraiser for $1

If I were you, I would let your daughter solve this problem - for example, by asking her friends, and then figuring out whom to give the valentines to. Neither teacher nor parent should be involved.
If she is not in a situation where she can solve this problem by asking her friends, then I would focus on that. (I am saying this sincerely, not to be snarky.)

I think that's about the last year they usually do. I'd email the teacher and ask before you spend any time or effort on them however. And you'll need a list of the classmate's names if so.
