My DD is a June bday and went to K at 5 and there is a boy in her class who is exactly one year older than her. But she also has two July and one August kid in her class who also started at age 5 so she’s not the youngest.

I haven’t come across any June b days being held back.

I did not hold my August or July kids back

I did not hold my June kid back.

FWIW, we held back our end-of-August DS (in DCPS) and he is the oldest kid in his class.

I live in the Midwest. Nearly everyone would hold back a June birthday.

June is in the sweet spot. No one in June gets held back based on dates. It's late fall/winter birthdays that have issues.

We are in DC. I only know one redshirted kid, who turned 5 just before the deadline. That's it--other late summer/September bdays went on time, including my kid, and seem to be doing fine three years later. They are indistinguishable from those with earlier birthdays, for the most part (except for a few that are almost one year older).

I didn't hold back my late-July kid. No regrets. However, one of her friends has an August birthday and she was redshirted. I can somehow see August being questionable, but definitely not June, unless there are special needs involved.

I did not hold back my mid-June Ffx Co. kid, because he was ready, but he’s definitely among the smallest/youngest in his class in K.

I have two kids with August birthdays and don't see anyone holding back June birthdays. We're in public schools in close-in Virginia, if it matters.

OP, your son is only three. You have a long time left to parent. My advice is, don't worry about what others are doing. Do what's right for your kid.

This is my 3rd child, Im well aware that theres lots of time left to parent PP. My other two are late fall and early winter birthdays so I never paid attention or thought about the holding back thing. But apparently Im hearing its different for late spring/summer birthday, which is why Im trying to get a feel for what people do. Of course any decision I make for my own kid will be based on my own kid.

Depends on your school system probably. In DC there's a Sept 30 cutoff for PK3 entry and people want their kids to start PK3 so there's no holding back. My child has a June birthday and probably 5-6 classmates like her just in her class and several more with birthdays July-Sept.

Hi, I dont want a debate and Im not looking for reasoning etc, I am just genuinely curious, with a Sept 1 cut off, are June kids being held back? I ask bc I have a 3 yr old with a mid June bday and Im hearing a lot of mixed things. So I just want to know did you hold back ur June kid or do u know ppl who did? Or does it seem like June birthdays are being sent at age 5 to K.
