For items that are expensive and hold value (like a north face jacket or CG coat) I would use this as a moment to teach/ reinforce the value of money and budgets. She should consign or sell those big ticket items. IMO it is an irresponsible use of money to throw very expensive items away. Who paid for those coats? Even if they are gifts does she understand how much the items cost? How many hours of babysitting or a retail job would be required to buy one?

If this is a lesson on helping the honesless then she can resell the coats and give the money to a shelter. It is also ok to keep the money. You can consign or sell on fb yard sales, etc.

When my DD decided she didn’t want any of her American girl dolls anymore, even though she had begged for so many, we sold them on our neighborhood listserv and she put that money towards a big ticket item she had been wanting. Holding that cash in her hand seemed to drill in some values of money.

Just give it away there are many pick up services. Take out two of the nicer coats and let the rest go. I live like this and it is really wonderful. I’d be so proud of my daughter!

I would look through the clothes because there might be some pieces that you know she will need but that she doesn't see the need for.

Look through the personal items as well and make sure she isn't disposing of anything that was not actually hers

She needs to put everything back in her room OR go through it herself and separate it into piles - donation-worthy/non personal vs trash. You shouldn't do that for her, she is capable.

Take 5 minutes and pull out the jackets.

Donate these right away.

All else can go to an all purpose donation center that will take household items, books, etc. Goodwill, Unique,Savers, Sal Army.

So basically
In that pile it has personal stuff all mixed with donate-able stuff. So either a look through into each and every bag is required which she doesn’t want to do. It includes books, personal stuff, toys, stationery, pictures

Op here again. I did think about a shelter but she said she unfortunately forgot and didn’t sort it so. And she just didn’t want to see it again because like the Mantra of Marie, you decide by what gives you joy and she let of it go. I am processing it all myself. Maybe I need to write to Marie!!

Great! If you don’t need the money, you could donate to a shelter. If you do, then store in the garage and have a yard sale in the spring!

Keep the stuff in garage for a couple months, then donate. Keeping one cost for backup is good idea. Great job by your teen!

While we were out yesterday, My dd, 14 has done the big Marie kondo in her room. Everything has been nearly emptied out. She went from 6 winter coats to 1, 30 sweaters to 6 and 1000 pens and markers to maybe 10! Her desk is all cleared and her closets emptied. They are good stuff too but they all sit in garbage bags in The garage. Wwyd! Would you go through it and open it up or close your eyes and let all of it go to thrift or the dump? I am also thinking about the cost and what she has let go. She just said she needed cleansing and didn’t want these stuff Anymore as it gave her “no joy”....
