DS never did and he is just fine. He has a great roommate who he will live with next year too.

at least for my school, some of the matches "met" via FB.

Yep, roommate hunting/matching is the reason and extent of joining the college class fb group.

He's a senior in high school. Let him sort this out himself.

My understanding is that the utility of the Facebook (or other social media) group is to identify a roommate. DD is a junior at an ivy; she told me only the weird or out of touch kids go into the random pool for roommates these days. She used the facebook group to connect with her freshman year roommate, who ended up being an overnight camp acquaintance of a friend from high school, and they requested to be placed together as freshman. They had a good year together and are friendly. DD's best friend ended up being a HS classmate of the freshman roommate. Admittedly this kind of insular. DD attended a private and her friends are similar to her but shes happy so Im not going to worry.

That said, Facebook's popularity is rapidly dropping off (DD#2 is a HS senior and barely uses it). Its possible there is a different method this year.

He thinks it’s silly and if students from other areas actually use Facebook, that he’ll look like a loser for not having any Facebook friends.

Any thoughts?

Yeah. Join.

My kid used that group just long enough to chat with his assigned room mate and exchange phone number so they could text. He poked around a time or two and confirmed that almost no one from DMV was headed to his school. It was harmless. None of them have FB friends because most of them started their accounts for just this purpose.

My DD joined her Ivy ED FB group and met some interesting people last year. Certainly not required but it seemed useful.

The people organizing this at the University are older, hence the Facebook group. Most kids I know have Facebook pages, but they only use them to communicate with us old people.

I wouldn't worry about it. The college will send via email anything he really needs to know. Facebook was used more heavily after my DS started at college, not so much for social but for coordination reasons. The kids use it for study groups, ECs, and as an easy way to do group messaging with their friends from home.
