Like others have said, it depends on what specific interests your DC has.

I work with mostly civil engineers but some structural, etc and ENR (Engineering News Record)is a useful journal within the industry. I’ve linked to their review of top civil engineering research schools but their website has lots of good information that might be helpful to you.

Good student, first SAT was in the 1400s, looking at mechanical or aerospace engineering.
Doesn't really know what kind of environment, but not super-urban -- doesn't want to be in New York City but has said meh to Iowa State as well. Likes MIT, but it's a reach. Might consider a small school but is also looking at big state schools. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to gather up as many ideas as possible.

Here is an example from civil engineering... University of Illinois very good program...University of Delaware good program overall (one can quibble). But if DC is interested in railroad engineering (track structure, etc.) those are the first two schools on the list.

They should consider if they want a school where engineering is the majority, like a tech, or just one of the schools, like UMD.

Really depends on the type of engineering and whether they might stay for a master's degree. A lot of schools have good programs in most areas, but exceptional ones in certain specialties.

Also how strong of a student is DC? Does your kid know they want to study, say, chemical engineering? Or are they unsure of which branch of Engineering they want?

What does the student want? Interests? University environment?

Two parents are journalists; we don't anything about engineering. DC is a junior. Aside from the obvious: UMD, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ga Tech, what other schools -- small, large, near and far -- should our child be considering? I'm trying to go beyond just a US News ranking.
If you're a parent of an engineering major or an engineer yourself, I'd love your suggestions on colleges to consider and maybe why you'd recommend some of the places. Thanks!
