+1. I’s love to have a dog, but with busy work schedule and kids, I don’t feel like I can handle it. So sticking with a cat for now.

I grew up with cats. They're low-maintenance, cute, and hilarious. Never liked dogs--messy, dependent, and beastly.

Then, my husband wanted a puppy. I grudgingly agreed. And now, 8 yrs later, I have a huge shepherd who learned puppy eyes early on, and I'm smitten. Ton of work, so this could be our first and last dog, but he's awesome. Great prep for a baby, too.

Have a dog and a cat. Agree with others who say that cats are easier to manage, especially for travel and nights out. However, cats just don’t fill up the house with their personality - our dog does. When he’s not home, the house just feels empty. (Though we have a golden retriever, so that’s part of it). Plus, dogs are great walking/hiking buddies, which I love.

So, I guess that I’d go with dogs, though I also love our cats. Very glad to have both.

I like both and we have both but I feel like 20:21 and 20:36. With dogs you can certainly integrate them into human activities outside the home more than cats but I feel like with work and travel (even just a day trip) dogs are a lot to manage. Also financially dogs are substantially more expensive because they are bigger and go outside--our dog's vet bills over the course of her life have been just nuts (at least mid five figures). With indoor only cats you don't need to pay for flea meds or heart worm or other outside-related maintenance. Even on a long vacation a cat sitter to scoop and feed costs far less than boarding. And if you work and want to do the decent thing then you need to have a dog walker or go to doggie daycare. I love my dog and dogs in general but I think we will be a cat home for the foreseeable future after she goes.

Cats are so easy. You can lave them alone for a night and they won't die or destroy your house. You can hire someone to come twice a day when you go on vacation. I can't leave my dog for more than 8 hours by herself, our lives revolve around her. My cats love to cuddle and play, they have such unique personalities. The benefit/cost ratio is much higher for a cat, but a child would probably disagree.

Dogs for personality. I’m also allergic to cats so they’re not ever going to be in consideration. I find cats and dogs to be equally adorable though.

I am terribly allergic to cats and can't have one (or two, or three), I have two dogs and couldn't be happier.
I used to have Turkish Angora and Oriental Shorthair (a dog really, in a cat's body). Loved them to pieces and that's how I got asthma. Couldn't re home them, had them both from birth to their natural deaths.

I like both, but really prefer being a cat owner. Dogs are much higher maintenance. Our cat can be left for a weekend with the all you can eat kitty buffet and be perfectly fine. Also, you don’t need to worry about paying someone to walk your cat during the day or rush home after work instead of going wherever to let the cat out to pee. I love other people’s dogs, though!!

We have two cats and a large dog. I enjoy being a cat owner ten times more than a dog owner. They are so much less work. You can leave them for a couple nights and not have to find somewhere to board them. Mine cuddle with me on the couch and in bed. I know people have dogs that do the same, but mine is big and gangly (greyhound) so she’s not very cuddly. She’s a great dog and well behaved, but if I were to do it over I would only gets cats.

Hate dogs. Dirty, noisy, slobbery. Seems like the whole household is focused on trying to keep the dog’s chaos in check. The dog controls the household.
