I would also point out that the people on this board tend to be anti-Classic snobs. My DD plays Classic and the level of play in her division is excellent. The world does not revolve around travel, especially when one has more than one child and not-endless resources!

When you are used to paying $100 a season for rec or $200 total that's a big difference.

My two children BOTH play on Classic teams that are parent coaches. Wasn't planned that way, but we/they lucked out. Two different age groups and two different genders. At one time one of the kids had a paid coach one of the 2 practice days, but that added $150 x 8 practices ÷ 16 players, that added $75 each season, so still very reasonable.

Have been consistently winning SAM select for a few seasons now. Could be a good fit for someone who doesn't want the $ and commitment of travel but wants to play with talented players.

They are based in Silver Spring.
OP, pick a team that has practices close by.

If your Classic team (MSI) is parent coached, your season is two hundred bucks per person, plus uniform. So four hundred bucks for the season a hundred bucks for the uniform, five hundred bucks. That's the cheapest option that's not Rec. It is more competitive, and not crazy expensive like Travel, Premiere , Etc.

Many clubs are there. Check out the MSI Classic website. There are clubs in Kensington and Takoma. Here are links to two quality programs that have teams in classic.

Are there any clubs based out of the eastern half of the county? Silver Spring, even Kensington?

If you want to go inexpensive Classic is the only option although if you're coming from Rec you are in for sticker shock anyway. Many Classic teams, even if they are parent coached, will be $1000 or a little more a year. You may be able to find something closer to $500 but many of those teams are school teams and unless your children are phenomenal these teams will be "full" with the coaches not wanting to take on additional random players who are not their children's friends.

Most of the organizations above are year-round which makes them expensive. PPA may be cheaper if you just want fall and spring. $500 each season for a total of $1000. I think Toca also has that option so you could skip winter and I think their prices aren't that much more than PPA, although I think they require a separate uniform fee which can be a few hundred.

If expense is not a big concern, Travel is not that difficult to get in at all for younger ages. All big clubs have many teams per age group, the lower teams are not very different with good select/rec teams.

Your options:
"both kids want to play at the highest level they are capable of"

From most expensive to least expensive for MoCo:

Spirit (girls only)
Bethesda
Bordeaux (girls only)
Montgomery Rush
MSI Premier
Potomac

You can always just have them play classic / select a year up which is automatically makes it more challenging without adding any cost.

OP asked for most affordable. That wouldn’t be PpA, although I think PPA otherwise would check the boxes. Classic will be most affordable, especially if you find teams with a parent coach. But sometime you get what you pay for and there isn’t much difference fro rec for some Classic teams. SAM select is a league so you’d need to find a team that plays in that league (PPA has teams in Sam select).

FC Bordeaux is travel. Their top team traveled to Orlando and PA in two weeks for two tournaments.

MSI has more teams than SAM select.

PPA is a good option. https://www.ppateam.com/ourprograms

Looking for the most challenging / rigorous and most affordable options in close-in MoCo.

SAM select? MSI classic? Is there a difference in the level of play between those two? Any other options?

Not interested in career or college moves here! But both kids LOVE the game and want to play at the highest level they're capable of.

We've tried rec and it just wasn't terribly fun - half the kids really didn't know the game -- and while my kids aren't amazingly athletic, they're smart players and are hoping for something a bit more challenging and a bit quicker!

Would love to hear recommendations. This is for two different kids, one is U11 and the other is U15.
