14 year olds can't legally work.

15 year olds can only work in limited capacity/hours.

No one will hire a 14 year old. Try pet sitting, moving lawns, weeding or babysitting.

Uh, no.

Why? I worked in fast food and as a checkout girl at a supermarket and went in to get two Ivy League degrees with honors. I would actually say that it taught me about the value of education so I worked that much harder in college so I could get a better job upon graduation because I saw what the lives of adults were like who held these jobs.

It has nothing to do with that, I worked fast food too. It's her age. She's too young, those places legally can't hire her.

Most places won’t pay a 14 year old.

Around me 14 year olds can be Counselors in training at the various camps, but they aren’t getting paid, and in fact usually have to pay some sort of nominal fee to the camp to be in the program. I think when I looked last year Beauvoir, Sidwell, and the Cleveland Park Club has something like that for the 13/14/15 set.

PP here, I meant Headfirst or similar. Look for well established program offerings.

Headfirst definitely won't hire a 14 year old. My kid spent 7 summers there and at 14 was told there was nothing for him.

Fourteen is tough in DC - most places require 16.

You don't want your 14 year old working in fast food, particularly in DC, unless she can really take care of herself. Harassment, from customers and co-workers may be a big problem. If she was in a little town some place, sure. But not here.

Try summer camps, pool snack bars, pet sitting / dog walking. Babysitting probably makes more money than the amount of hours ahead could working fast food.

I know she can babysit here and there but I’d like her to have a real job with regular hours. She trying to save to study abroad in HS. She highly motivated but living in DC, I just don’t see the options! Where can I steer her?
