Who is comparing it to a sequoia, captain straw man? Compare it to the other vehicles in its class - pilot, highlander, atlas, Cx-9, etc. I drove a V8 4Runner prior, I don’t find it underpowered after 5 months of driving. We still have the 4Runner, I prefer to drive the ascent.

Just got one and LOVE it so far. No truth at all to the “underpowered” issue. It’s got way more pickup than my Forester and it’s bigger. Very roomy and comfortable, great features. Couldn’t be happier.

It will depend on the trim and options you want, but you may be able to get one quickly. When we bought there were some dealerships charging a premium, we paid 2k under msrp and took delivery pretty quick - there was another dealership that matched the price for one on the lot. You can check their inventory on the inidividual sites. Heritage in Catonsville shows 8 available and internet pricing below msrp. Farrish in Fairfax shows 15. They drive well, are spacious, have very good visibility, and did really well (top of class) in IIHS crash tests and consumer reports. As a PP above pointed out, it’s not a suburban, it’s also not a Tesla or mclaren, but it’s a really nice 3rd row suv.

Sorry, but a 5,000 lb tow rating on a four cylinder gasoline engine is laughable. A diesel four cylinder, maybe, because the powerband and torque curves are completely different for diesels than for gasoline engines... but this isn’t a diesel. It’s a slightly over-bored 2.5 L from the base model Outback, with more aggressive cam-timing and higher compression. That’s not gonna work, LOLz.

When it comes to doing truck-work: towing things, hauling heavy stuff inside, getting a heavy vehicle moving away from a stop quickly.... there’s no REplacement for DISplacement. Bigger engines are better. They aren’t straining constantly, beating themselves to death like a smaller engine.


Now, if you’re only buying this big Subaru to avoid having to own a minivan, and will transport nothing heavier than your two brats or a bulk package of dried kale chips, then it’ll be fine.

But don’t get fooled into thinking you own something that would be as capable as a Tahoe, Suburban or a Sequoia.

We bought one in late July and love it (premium 8-seat). More leg/headroom in the third row than the highlander, more storage space behind the third row, and crash test results were FAR better. I preferred the feel and the safety features over the pilot. The 4 cylinder engine feels better than the highlander and pilot and has had no problem hauling our 6 people and 2 dogs, I prefer it over my older V-8 suv. It is rated to tow 5000lbs for every model above the base.

We expected it to be a larger version of the forester (which we already owned), but it is a huge step up in the refinement and power of the engine and the fit/finish - way nicer. It is definitely worth a test drive. If you are already a Subaru owner you can call corporate and they will send you a $500 loyalty coupon for any future Subaru purchase, applied after your negotiated price.

I had the same thought when I saw the specs. They don't even have an option for the 6-cylinder.

Test drove one in May. Felt underpowered. Did ok with just the salesman and I, but it was just adequate. With three more people and luggage, or a bunch of heavy stuff, or towing a boat or horse trailer, it would be incredibly taxed.

Why they put a 4 cylinder engine in a 7 passenger car is beyond me. They should’ve put the 3.6 L 6 cylinder in it.

Just curious- do you always car shop during the holidays? How was it at the dealer? I took my car to get serviced last Friday and it was a mistake — packed. I had to come back home because they said it would take 3.5 hours instead of the usual 1.

No we don't always car shop during the holidays but then again we only car shop every 10-15 years.
We just so happen to need a new car now as our current one is having issue after issue.
I imagine the service departments are very busy as people are prepare to travel long distances. The sales departments we've been to have been quiet.
