Yes. About a two hour train ride.
I am a PP who got their masters there. It is not a fun school. Binghamton will give you more of a typical college life. SB may have a better science program, but no one is going to turn their nose up at a Binghamton grad with a science degree. It's not worth it to me for undergrad.

I got my MA/PhD in the sciences from Binghamton. It is a good school, particularly for undergrad.

The town is awful, having been in decline for nearly 100 years. But, it works as a college town.

SB has invested a lot, and seems to be the STEM place to be.

Geneseo is a strong public LAC, if your kid is interested in smaller schools I would definitely check it out. It's about a half hour south of Rochester, so not completely isolated in my book. It's about 2/3rds women which could be a plus or minus depending on your kid.

I went to SB. If you want to be a doctor, engineer or physicist this is the strongest by far. It is very competitive, very hard and all business. If he is looking for a party scene, this is not the school. Bing and geneseo would be the more typical college experience.

I went to Binghamton for under grad (bio) and SB for my masters (education). I would not go to Stony Brook for undergrad as it is pretty much a commuter school- not a fun campus really. Great science program though.

I loved Binghamton. It is not a pretty campus if that is what you are looking for. You go for a great education at a good price. Though not a typical "party" school, you can find ways to party- trust me!

Geneseo has the harshest winters and is near almost nothing.

Stonybrook is very, very far from the city, and getting there and back will take longer than you think.

My memory is that Binghamton is what the best undergrads normally choose, but Stonybrook is much improved in the ranking since I was a kid.

So Geneseo - near nothing, Binghamton, near very little but more than Geneseo, SB near an endless stretch of suburbs.

Binghamton is the strongest.

Geneseo is far smaller and more rural than the other two, more of a liberal arts/teachers college. Binghamton and Stony Brook are larger research universities.

Looking at Binghamton, Stony Brook and possibly Geneseo. Science major-bio maybe. Can someone offer any information on the schools in terms of culture,academics etc. The location of the campuses? I am not familiar with New York at all. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
