It is overboard but at least in elementary school its the expectation and kids feel left out if they don't. We had to do 16 gifts - did 10 gift cards, 6 presents (after 10 gift cards I was done) - two classroom teachers, several paraprofessionals, specials teachers... and a few others.. its completely out of hand.
