She needs to be supervised and played with when outside.

Our first summer with our puppy we let her dig. This spring our backyard looks awful. No more beautiful spring flowers. No more flowering perennials. I am so over the digging. She now wears a stim collar and every time she starts to dig she gets a firm ‘no’ and then a vibration. She doesn’t dig anymore.

My 7 year old lab has been a digger since day 1 (or week 8 lol). She doesn’t chew anything, steal food, bark incessantly, or have any other bad habits, so I try to tolerate the digging. I did effectively landscape the yard to deter her and also to encourage the moles she’s tracking to other areas, but she will always be a digger.

We solved this problem by filling the holes, replacing the sod, and then staking down squares of chicken wire/fencing over the area. If they are determined to dig, the only thing that will stop them is a physical barrier. After the habit is broken, you can pull up the chicken wire and your yard will be fine.

This may sound simplistic but have you tried saying "No" and "Stop" and redirecting the dog to chase a ball?

Our nearly 4 year old dog attempted to dig ONCE when he was a puppy and we stopped him immediately and he has not done it since.

+1. We don’t even really let our dog in the backyard since eventually he’ll get bored and start digging. However we’re able to do long walks 3x/day.

Bumping this as we are having the same issue. Has anyone put pepper or poop in the holes? Trying to find ways to stop the dog from digging but he’s determined.....

Is your dog a hound? I’ve gotten mine to stop mostly through redirection, but the instinct is so real and when they smell something they will just fixate on it. Hound problems!

My dog is not allowed outside without supervision. Otherwise he digs, like most dogs. He gets one long walk and two short walks a day, and plays with his toys and the kids.

More walkies, trick training, doggie daycare, etc. More mental and physical stimulation will stop the digging. When the mental and physical stimulation doesn't happen, because we're not perfect and it's hard to fit it all in, then keep her inside.

Our back yard has a massive area where the dog has gone to town digging. Has anyone ever been able to stop this behavior? Because now the solution is that we just don't let her outside much. Which no one likes.
