This book was published in 1980. I think this spoiler was out there a long time ago.

The fudge books are old. I think back when she wrote it, back when I was kid (I’m 37), kids didn’t believe in Santa for as long as they do now.
Parents weren’t so involved and micromanaging and I think kids did spill the beans for others sooner.

Judy Blume- who was raised Jewish: Said that she can't imagine anyone being upset about the book, because all children know Santa isn't real......sigh.....

The book is narrated by a fifth-grade boy, and is intended for older elementary students. If, by fourth or fifth grade, your child has not ever heard anyone say that Santa isn't real, then you have other issues.

Oooh, like what "issues", exactly? Do tell.

Not pp, but social isolation?

You live in an underground bunker? You belong to a cult? Seriously, by fourth grade, kids should have heard SOMEONE say that Santa isn't real. Maybe they didn't believe that person and they still think that Santa is real, but it's not realistic to think that kids that age should be sheltered even from the suggestion that there is no Santa. A kid in a book saying that Santa isn't real is not that big of a deal.

My teen threatened to out me as Santa to his younger siblings the other day and I pretty much dared him to do it—it would make my life a lot easier not to keep up with it. And my youngest wants to know why we can’t have THREE elfs like her friend does...

Well, this was a problem for us when we read the books together. I kind of saw it coming and so, upon stopping for the night, used the opportunity to skip forward a few paragraphs when we picked it back up the next night and filled it in myself when reading to DC. But, yes, I didn't remember that from when I was a kid and I didn't care for it.
That's great some of you have kids who found out early or didn't care. Certainly, you can understand that there are kids who are different from yours.

In any event, it was not harm and I was able to gloss over it. So it wasn't a huge deal in the end.

She's right. Kids play along with the fantasy.

I guess my kids are slow, then. My 7 year old has mostly figured it out. My 5 year old is nowhere near that yet. What a baby.

Another holiday favorite- attacking the Jews for not playing their part in protecting Christian children from hearing a single thing about Santa, notwithstanding the onslaught of Christmas in popular culture.

BTW- Superfudge is a book for middle to late ES students. And, another PSA- Judy Blume’s books talk about other unpleasant topics you may want to shield your children from: racism (Iggie’s house) bullying (Blubber), anti-Semitism (Starring Sally J Freedman).

An attitude of "I know it's not real but it's fun to play along with this" is perfectly acceptable in the case of Santa, Tooth Fairy, fairies in general, etc.

Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year, and this is SO NOT A BIG DEAL.

But thanks for the heads-up, OP.

One of my favorite dcum seasonal themes.

I was hoping for a Starbucks cup thread, but unfortunately they’ve gone fairly traditional this year.
