I think the SES data was posted to explain why there are not many people on DCUM who have experience with sending their children there. There just isn’t a lot of overlap between the DCUM crowd and the school community.
I do live in a nearby school cluster, and know some families zoned for the school, but they all got COSAs, went private, or ended up moving.

I know it's not what you hoped for, nor is it particularly helpful to your decision-making process, but it has kept your query near the top of the page! Maybe someone will yet come by who has the personal experience you seek.

I do not have experience with NHE but have had two kids go through Oak View, the 3rd - 5th school that NHE feeds into.

Granted that my perspective is as a HGC/CES parent, but I've been very impressed with Oak View as a whole school. It is well-run and bright, and the administration seems adept at securing additional resources and opportunities for the students.

I admire what individual educators and MCPS are trying to do there, but I would try everything in my ability to get my child into a different school. FWIW, we ourselves are AA teachers in MCPS who grew up poor. I’m sure I’ll be flamed, but I’m being honest. I already moved my family from another school system to avoid an ES with a concentration of high poverty-related challenges. Comparing the opportunities and atmosphere convinced me that it was the right move for us. And I would do it again.

You would have no way of knowing this. I taught there for several years, and the vast majority of students of native born US citizens. I don’t have recent experience to offer OP, since I left 5 years ago, but the school population faces enormous challenges. I’m not sure it would be a great place for a kid who has no experience with those challenges.

Our Bethesda school raises money for and donates on a regular basis to NHE.

It’s over 70% Hispanic and and almost 90% FARMS.

I know a teacher who works there. I used to work with her. She’s phenomenal. I will say teachers who choose to teach in title 1 school are super dedicated. The title one funds and smaller class are a huge plus.

Your post is not about current experience, but about someone who was arrested in 2013. Unfortunately there are many schools where predatory behavior has occurred.
The current principal at NHE started in 2015, and the AP started in 2016.

How many administrators/supervisory personnel are at NHE that were there when Lawrence Joynes was arrested. Did any of them notice his creepy behavior and complain? If not why not? If so, why didn’t they keep advocating for something to be done?
Is the principal supervisor the same person? Is there an assistant principal? What about NHE enabled that guy to get away with predatory behavior for so long.

Hi, we heard some negative stuff about NHE but did a tour and saw just positive stuff. The principal and teachers seem super dedicated, the kids seem calm, happy, engaged, learning. Being Title I they seem to have extra resources like reading specialists, counselors etc + a health center. What gives? Thanks so much!
