I've never kept track. If I had to guess - probably something along the lines of $1500-1800 per year, maybe? That would include shoes, underwear, coats, etc etc etc. I think my husband probably spends about that, too. We have a HHI of about $180k, if that helps.

My druthers would be to buy a little more, because I enjoy clothes - but most of what I buy is either of the Uniqlo/Everlane/J Crew variety or else consignment stuff. My husband buys most of his clothes at Casual Male XL because he has a hard time finding things that fit other places.

Does that sound like a lot? I do exercise a lot of restraint - I don't buy most of what I'd like, and I wear the hell out of what I've got.

I started tracking and I'm spending around $3K per year on me alone. It's too much. But I like clothes, I love shoes, and it's like a hobby for me. I pin outfit ideas, follow a few fashion blogs, and just like ot look at new things, new colors, new shapes.

At the same time, I think it is too much, and I'd like to cut back. My closet is overflowing. I am terrible at discarding. Maybe I need to sell things that I don't really like or wear much anymore?

Funny enough, today I am wearing tall black boots that I have had for at least 12 years. I was walking the dog and thinking about a recent DCUM post where someone snakily typed something about how tall boots are out, and only people in the midwest are still wearing them. I thought, people are still wearing tall boots because they like them because they bought them 10 years ago and the boots are still in great shape, because they're comfortable and warm. I think the first few posters who spend next to nothing are only one facet of DCUM, and there are lots of people who spend more - following trends.

I started a spreadsheet in September to track what I wear each day. It's caused me to reach deeper in my closet and really wear the variety that I own. I've also found that in the past few months I'e hardly repeated work outfits. Weekend outfits I do repeat a lot, in the sense that I really only have 1-2 pairs of jeans and I wear them a lot on weekend days or WFH days.

I go through spurts. I don't like shopping and trying on clothes, so it's not a regular thing, but every 4 to 6 months I get tired of what's in my closet, or realize that things don't fit well or are worn out, and will go out and buy 5 new tops, 3 new pants, a few jackets, sweaters, shoes, etc. all at once. Probably $500 or so. So maybe $1000 per year?

My husband has been wearing the same stuff for like a decade, but when he does buy something new (maybe 1 suit every 5 years or a new shirt once a year) he spends more per article of clothing than I do.

For kids I buy a lot - it's cheap and easy and they grow fast. Maybe $500 a year, but I do resell a portion of it.

No idea. Never tracked it or care. My husband hasn't bought anything since I've known him or before. I buy everything.

most of the people who replied above are pretty frugal in this area. How do you do that?! I constantly have the urge to buy new clothes, new shoes, new bags...I try to budget them though so my spending won't get out of control. I admire those of you who only buy clothes when "needed"!

I don't keep track but I don't spend a lot. I love to hunt through consignment shops for incredible bargains. My DH spends very little since he hates shopping.

Since I work full-time and have a toddler (aka my life is somewhat crazy), I've delegated clothes to Stitch Fix. I have it on a 4 times/year schedule. I typically like what they send and buy all of it, so that's about $200 each time. I rarely if ever buy clothes otherwise (aside from a couple pairs of flats for work and maybe a pair of sneakers every 5 years when my old pair wear out), so call it $1000-1100/year.

DH just bought new clothes for the first time in probably 7-8 years, so he's negligible.

It's very much NOT a priority for me. I spend about $300 on running shoes per year, and probably average $50 / month otherwise. I'm a woman.

My spouse has a higher profile role and spends a mint on suits and shoes. I don't begrudge him that. Probably three $500 suits and two $300 shoes each year plus all of the shirts, ties, and dry cleaning.

I am a Loft, Target, Banana kind of girl, and yes, it shows. I just don't care about clothing that much.

For myself - $600?
For the kids - $300?
My husband - nothing unless he has to replace something a homeless person wouldn't wear.

We keep things until they wear out and buy second-hand when we can (eBay and second-hand shops).

I really don't know. I don't specially keep track, but I am not a person to spend money on good quality clothes for my kids. My sons put holes in knees of pants on a weekly basis. They are always smiling stuff on themselves.

I'd say we spend less than 1/2 of 1% of HHI on clothing.

Really? I am strongly guessing the opposite. Woman here, btw, who spends exponentially more than her husband.

Not much because before kids I bought a lot of expensive classics and I just use that small capsule wardrobe. That takes care of work. However if you count how much I spend on dry-cleaning its still significant. Maybe 150 bucks a month on clothes (panty hose, yoga pants, a new winter vest etc etc) and 100 a month on delivered dry-cleaning. It helps I work in a very conservative law firm and none of us dress trendy...ever.
