Definitely not true with top-flight engineering programs at elite universities. They want to see four years of a foreign language.

Hmm. I don’t know if she’d repeat Spanish 1, she got all A’s. Perhaps repeating Spanish 2 would be worthwhile. She has a B, not the end of the world, and I’ve emailed the teacher for some help, but she is studying a lot and not getting why her tests scores are so low. Thx.

OP, could she start over, taking Spanish 1 in 9th grade? That would put her in Spanish 4 in 12th. Her grade in 12th wouldn't be scrutinized too much, especially past the first semester.

Two issues. Op. Getting into college. Graduating from college. She can get into college, with limited choice, with 2 years only if she gets the Standard Diploma for HS rather than the Advanced Studies Diploma. Four yrs vs 2+2 for getting into college is probably unimportant -except- that there will be some colleges, some majors that will require mastery. So ... your DD would want to go into college with the strongest foundation possible or risk not graduating college. Research majors carefully.

She doesn’t know what she wants to do yet. She’s not failing but she’s had many tests so far where she studied a lot, seemed to have the content down. And then gets like 75-80% on the test. So I though maybe she could try ASL or Latin next year. She’s an excellent reader but does have ADHD/anxiety fornwhich she is being treated and on meds for anxiety.

Agree with trying Latin. My DD struggled in ES and MS Spanish and is acing it in HS. She ADHD and had poor auditory processing sub test scores. Latin isn’t a spoken language. So if your kid’s not strong on the listening comprehension it’s a great call.

What type of college does she want to go to?

Four years on one language. Depth is more important.

The schools list what they like to see. You can check a few college websites (under admissions, they often list the high school mix they want). Most say how many years of "foreign language" without specifying whether it is the same one.

Could she have a learning disability, because some kids who do cannot get foreign languages (and substitute American Sigh Language, because they find it easier).

My son struggled with Spanish. Some people recommended he try Latin. He ended up just stopping after 2 years of Spanish. He was a good student but not going for Liberal Arts and not a very top school. He had plenty of college choices. We just decided he would focus on his strengths rather than being miserable over Spanish..and lowering his GPA.

It really depends on teh school. My son is applying to colleges now and some of the schools (mostly SLACs ranked 20-60) do say they prefer longer study of one language.

Could she consider dropping back into Spanish 1 now / doing Spanish 2 again next year?

Or just starting over next year in 9th with a new langauge?

My daughter in 8 th grade is in Spanish 2 and floundering. I’m concerned that perhaps Spanish 3 and 4 are not the best idea. What if she starts a new language in 9th? Does she have to do all 4 years or does new language 1 and 2 along with Spanish 1 and 2 count for the 4 years?
