Did it stop him from smoking weed? I don't think so. But he kept it to a minimum, I am 99.99% certain he never drove while high, and it did not affect his academic performance or keep him from work or extracurriculars.
this has been our experience, though DS is 14 and not driving or taking drivers Ed yet.
I focus on the risks of distraction from school, sport, and other aspects of his life that are his "job" right now, as well as how his dishonesty affects our relationship--now, and when he starts asking for the car keys. I hate to be a jerk but honesty and trust are so important to driving. at that point we may have to do drug testing.
