OP, my DS looked at lots of Catholic universities (he is waiting now to hear from ND, BC and others). The schools he applied to were ND, BC, Fordham, and Villanova (among other secular schools). He also considered Georgetown, College of the Holy Cross, Loyola Chicago, Loyola Baltimore, Marquette, and Providence College. I do believe merit aid is easier to get at all the schools with the exception of ND, BC, and Villanova (although Villanova has more merit available than the other two). I have also heard good things about University of Scranton. Here is a list you might want to work from:

Catholic in DC but it is poor on merit aid. Wheeling Jesuit is kind of cute. Fordham perhaps?

OP here. Thanks for the recommendations so far. I just spent some time looking up a few of these. They are all very expensive, too!

Is it easier to get merit aid at one of these smaller Catholic schools? Does someone with stats like DS even get merit aid?

I know we can ask the counselor, but we are treated as though he's doing great, when I know that his options are limited by his own numbers and ours.

My kid would actually fit in very well at BC or ND, and has expressed interest in both of them(and DH went to one of these schools, so DS is familiar with both campuses). We are sometimes-active Catholics, conservative-ish (with the liberal SJ bent that comes with Catholicism), and he is looking to major in economics or finance. He'd like a school with sporty kids, but it doesn't have to be D1, and the lack of frats is appealing.

But, here's the thing, both schools would be a stretch for him, academically, and we couldn't afford either (only have 100k in 529, which would get us 1.5 years at either) one of them.

Where else should someone like my son look? So far, as a junior, he has a 3.9 weighted / 3.6 unweighted. SAT = 1260 (going to take it again obviously) He is a one-sport varsity athlete, volunteers with a youth organization, and participates in a couple of clubs (sports-oriented clubs)He is a confirmed Catholic, but isn't really into it. He'd like to stay on the East coast.

Thoughts?
